1030:CYPPRESS:01[01] Clinton's report on CyprusWashington, Nov 8 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton considers the appointment of his personal envoy for Cyprus and the direct talks between the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities earlier this year as the two most important developments in the period June to July.In his bimonthly report to Congress on the situation in Cyprus, Clinton said the appointment of Richard Holbrooke, whom he describes as one of the "most capable negotiators", as his special emissary "demonstrates our commitment to help promote a final political settlement for Cyprus." Holbrooke is due in Cyprus on Monday for separate talks with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and is planning to have a joint meeting with the two community leaders on Tuesday morning. US Cyprus coordinator Thomas Miller arrives on Sunday to prepare the ground for the meetings. Clinton's report said the second most important development in the period under review is the invitation by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the two community leaders for direct talks under his auspices. The US president notes in his report that Annan's special advisor for Cyprus, Diego Cordovez, who chaired the talks, "noted that the cordial atmosphere between the parties at Troutbeck was a good beginning for subsequent negotiating sessions." Cordovez is also expected in Cyprus on November 18 for talks with Clerides and Dentkash. CNA DA/MM/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1100:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cypriot, Greek Foreign Ministers coordinate movesNicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and his Greek counterpart Theodoros Pangalos have exchanged views on current developments affecting Cyprus in a bid to coordinate efforts relating to the Cyprus question and membership of the European Union."We examined current issues, Monday's visit to Cyprus by US presidential emissary Richard Holbrooke and had a preliminary exchange of views," Kasoulides said after the meeting. He said Pangalos briefed him on the content of the Greco-Turkish summit in Crete, earlier this week, and preparations in Europe in view of December's European Council in Luxembourg. Asked if he expects anything from Holbrooke's visit, Kasoulides said at this stage he did not know the issues Holbrooke wishes to raise during his meetings. The US envoy is due to have separate meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and hold a joint meeting with them. Greek deputy foreign minister, Yiannos Kranidiotis, who was present at the Athens meeting, said the meeting provided the chance to "analyse the situation and coordinate our policy."
