[01] US President - New Cyprus ambassador - Cyprus problem

Washington, Sep 11 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton has given his personal assurance that his country will continue its efforts for a bizonal, bicommunal and federal solution in Cyprus.

Receiving yesterday the credentials of the Cyprus Republic's new ambassador to the US, Erato Kozakou - Marcoullis, the American President described Cyprus as a "longstanding friend of the US and an important member of the international community".

"We have worked intensely with your government to help bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem, bearing in mind that any such solution will be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federal framework under UN auspices," Clinton said.

His statement comes only a few days after Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash proposed the establishment of a confederation of two states in Cyprus, already rejected by the Cyprus government and all political leaders as it is contrary to UN resolution on Cyprus.

"I give my personal assurance that the US will stay fully engaged in efforts to find a solution and that we will not rest until success is achieved," Clinton added.

Referring to Cyprus, he said "it has a vibrant progressive economy" and praised the Republic because "it has supported efforts to promote peace and reconciliation around the world".

The US President said bonds between the two countries have remained strong in years, since Cyprus gained its independence from British colonial rule in 1960, "despite the difficult times Cyprus has experienced".

Presenting her credentials, Marcoulli expressed the Cyprus government's respect for US commitment in efforts to settle the Cyprus problem and reassured the government continues to support UN efforts for a settlement.

Cyprus' future lies in the reunification of the island and its people and its full membership to the European Union, she said, pledging that the government will do all it can towards this direction.

Marcoulli said the Cyprus government expects US support to President Glafcos Clerides' proposal for the island's demilitarisation by encouraging the UN chief to take an initiative in this direction.

Our side aims at and remains committed to a just, viable bizonal and bicommunal federal solution in Cyprus that will guarantee its independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Cyprus, she added.

She underlined that all troops as well as Turkish settlers living in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 must be withdrawn.

Marcoulli also served as the Republic's ambassador to Sweden from 1996 until 1998.

[02] US President - New Greek ambassador - Cyprus question

Washington, Sep 11 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton expressed concern about the lack of progress in efforts to settle the Cyprus problem to Greece's new ambassador to the US, Alexandros Philon.

Philon presented his credentials to the American President at the White House yesterday.

During a discussion after the ceremony, Clinton reiterated US interest to continue efforts to reach a settlement in Cyprus and Greco-Turkish relations.

Receiving the credentials, the US President said "our partnership in NATO, joint efforts in the Balkans and mutual concern for greater security in southeastern Europe will shape our relationship over the next millennium."

"We must not forget our cooperation in resolving the ongoing conflicts in Cyprus and the Aegean," he added.

Clinton said "these are difficult problems that demand our utmost attention and we will remain committed to working with you to find lasting solutions".

The US President pointed out that Philon assumes his duties "during a period of remarkable progress in Greece".

"Your nation continues to play a critical role in promoting regional stability," he added.

[03] President Clerides - Greek MPs

Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides today discussed Cyprus' European Union course with a delegation from the Greek Parliament European Issues Committee visiting Cyprus.

After the meeting the head of the six-member delegation, Loucas Apostolakis, said Cyprus is on a good course regarding its accession to the EU.

He pointed out that EU decisions on Cyprus still stand and could not be overturned.

"Our national issues may be at a crucial point, but Hellenism has managed to tackled them jointly," Apostolakis added.

The delegation, that arrived on Wednesday for a four-day visit, has also met party leaders or representatives and later today will call on the Primate of the Cyprus Church, Archbishop Chrysostomos.

President Clerides also received today Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Kyriacos Rodousakis, but no statements were made after the meeting.
