    [01] Spokesman - US - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government today expressed satisfaction with statements by the US President Bill Clinton that his administration is working towards a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus.

"We are satisfied when any UN Security Council member, and especially a permanent member, remains firm on a bizonal, bicommunal federation," Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides said.

Receiving yesterday the credentials of the Cyprus Republic's new ambassador to the US, Clinton said that "any solution will be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federal framework under UN auspices."

Last week Denktash proposed the establishment of a confederation of two states in Cyprus, which has been rejected by the Cyprus government and political leaders as it is contrary to UN resolution on Cyprus.

The spokesman said the government "is trying to achieve a more forceful stance from the international community and especially the five permanent members of the Security Council, towards the new Turkish effort to change the basis of the peace talks."

Until today negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides were held by the leaders of the two communities and aimed at achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

Denktash has said he will not participate in talks unless his illegal regime in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 is recognised.

Meanwhile, Greek ambassador to Nicosia Kyriacos Rodousakis today briefed President Glafcos Clerides on a meeting held in Athens yesterday between Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and US State Department Cyprus coordinator Thomas Miller.

The spokesman said Rodousakis also informed the President on Pangalos' meeting with UN Resident Representative in Cyprus Ann Hercus, but refrained from revealing the details of the discussions.

[02] Lyssarides - Return from Athens

Larnaca, Sep 11 (CNA) -- Socialist EDEK leader, Vassos Lyssarides, stressed today that initiatives should be launched so as to return to the discussion of the real substance of the Cyprus problem rather than focus on the S300 defensive system.

Speaking on his return from Athens, where he met with Greek Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, Lyssarides expressed satisfaction with their talks.

He pointed out their conclusion was that "the Cyprus problem should be seen in its right perspective" as a problem of invasion and occupation.

"The Cyprus problem existed and would have existed without the S300 anti-aircraft missiles," Lyssarides said.

The Socialist leader said he also met US State Department, Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Miller, who was visiting Athens.

Reaffirming that a solution to the Cyprus problem should be based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, Lyssarides said he did not believe there was any "change of scene" after Miller's visit to Athens.

He also made special reference to a negative climate against Turkey that he said he detects in the region, due to its military cooperation with Israel, adding that this should be exploited.

    [03] Zeno Conference - concluded

Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The conclusions of the International Philosophic Conference "Zeno and his Inheritance" will be sent to the greatest universities worldwide.

The three-day Conference, which was organised in Cyprus by the Larnaca Municipality and the Pierides Institute, was concluded today with important announcements and suggestions on stoic philosophy. The conclusions will be published soon.

Meanwhile, Larnaca Municipality is making a tremendous effort to find and collect material from all over the world regarding Zeno and his teachings.

Already, a large amount of material is in Cyprus and is being exhibited at Larnaca, which is built on the ancient city of Kiti, the birthplace of Zeno.

The exhibition was inaugurated in the framework of the Conference and will remain open until early October.

Zeno was born in ancient Kiti in 336 BC and died in Athens in 264 BC. During his life as a philosopher, he taught on physics, morality and logic.

He founded the Stoic school of thought, which mainly urged man to comply to nature. According to Stoic philosophy, the freedom of the person is found within compliance to world fate.
