    [01] Britons - Stabbing - Release

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- Two British tourists held in custody as suspects for assault against a fellow Briton were released yesterday as there was no evidence against them, according to the police.

    Kofi Ackah, 22, and Jason Jonathan Pinter, 29, were arrested last month and remanded in custody for eight days as suspects for the attempted murder of Andrew Delarno Grey, 35, during a beach party.

    [03] Famagusta Municipal Council - Petition - Embassies

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- A delegation of the Municipal Council of Famagusta (Ammochostos) today handed a petition over to the Ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council urging them to use their influence to achieve a just and viable solution to the island's question.

    The Council protests against the occupation of the eastern Turkish occupied town and calls for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the principles of the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.

    [04] President Clerides - Statement

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Aug 2 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has fended off critical press remarks about the presence of four party leaders in Geneva and the cost to the taxpayer, stressing he gets "important" assistance from them during the UN-led peace talks, currently underway.

    The President dismissed reports about the cost of their presence as unfounded and said this should not create any problem in that the future of the country is at stake at the Geneva talks.

    [05] Pet Travel Scheme - Britain - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- The Pet Travel Scheme, which allows certain dogs and cats to enter the UK without guarantine, is to be extended to cats and dogs meeting certain conditions from rabies-free islands including Cyprus.

    According to a press release issued by the British High Commission in Cyprus the Scheme which was launched on 28 February this year applies to 22 countries in Western Europe. CNA/RM/RG/2000

    [06] President Clerides - Alvaro de Soto - Meeting

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Aug 2 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said good work was done at his meeting today with the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, noting that he was satisfied that talks were underway.

    Speaking after the meeting, which lasted about an hour, President Clerides said that "good work was done", while asked if he was satisfied with the pace of the UN-led proximity talks, he said: "As a man who wants an early solution of the Cyprus problem, I am happy that we are talking".

    [07] Spokesman - UN peace talks

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Aug 2 (CNA) -- The government considers that there is a calendar for the UN peace talks, agreed on 5 July between the UN and the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides, which is still valid and to which President Glafcos Clerides is committed.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, speaking from Geneva, said discussions at the talks cover all the four core issues (constitution, security, territory, refugees-property) and noted the Greek Cypriot side shows flexibility but not on matters relating to certain principles.
