    [01] Interior Minister - Illegal immigrants - Lebanon

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) - Interior Minister, Christodoulos Christodoulou, said today that the 275 illegal immigrants, who were under guard at Limassol Port for the past three weeks, have already reached Lebanon and are disembarking.

    Christodoulou said that "the whole operation of returning the illegal immigrants to Lebanon, from where they came from, took place in an orderly, calm and safe manner", adding that "there were no incidents", due to the excellent way in which the Police handled the matter. CNA/RG/MM/2000

    [02] Government Spokesman - Yugoslavia - Elections

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) - The Cyprus government today said it was in line with European Union positions that the opposition in Yugoslavia has won the elections.

    Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said that the Serbian people's wish must be respected and thus the opposition's demand for verification of the result should be met. CNA/MA/RG/MM/2000

    [03] Government Spokesman - British Foreign Secretary

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) - The Cyprus government today expressed satisfaction with statements made yesterday by Britain's Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook.

    Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, noted Cook's reference to a solution in Cyprus based on UN resolutions, the appeal to Turkish Cypriots to understand that they have much to gain from Cyprus' European Union membership and that "it is in their interest to solve the problem on the island so they can also join the Union", and the assurance that Britain has never recognised the puppet state in northern Tukrish occupied Cyprus and has "no intention of doing so".     [06] Government Spokesman - Annan - Barsoni

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) - Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, today expressed certainty that the United Nations had "received the clear message that only if they face Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots as communities will there be any real hope to substantially move forward in this effort" to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Papapetrou noted that the Greek Cypriot side is participating in UN-led proximity talks "with goodwill", stressing that it would not agree to a solution outside UN resolutions, i.e. "any solution other than a bizonal, bicommunal federation". CNA/MA/RG/MM/2000

    1900:CYPRESS:07 OSCE - Severin - Kyprianou by Riana Magidou Limassol, Oct 4 (CNA) --President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Coopreation in Europe (OSCE) Andrian Severin has said a solution of the protracted Cyprus question must be based on UN resolutions and expressed hope that the problem will soon be solved and Cyprus reunited.

    In his opening remarks at the OSCE Seminar on "Organised crime and corruption", in the coastal town of Limassol, Severin said that Cyprus is a divided island and noted that "Europe cannot live with this problem unsolved".

    Nicosia, Oct 4 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has expressed sorrow and concern over the tension of the past few days in the Middle East, and the bloody clashes between Israelis and Palestinians.
