[01] Foreign Minister - Cyprus peace effort

Nicosia, Oct 8 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has made it abundantly clear that "we will never accept a confederation in Cyprus nor a solution of two states, as this would not constitute a settlement", noting these possibilities have already been rejected by the US, Britain, Russia, France, China and the European Union.

Speaking at a ceremony held last night by the Municipality of the Turkish occupied town of Morphou, Kasoulides referred to an opening statement made by the UN Secretary General at the start of proximity talks in New York last month, which caused concern to the Greek Cypriot side, and expressed certainty the UN and the international community now realise its consequences.

    [02] DIKO - Resolution - Cyprus question

Nicosia, Oct 8 (CNA) -- Centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) believes the Cyprus problem is at a very crucial phase and there is an effort underway that is leading to a confederation on the island, a settlement it considers as unacceptable.

In a resolution adopted during the first day of its conference yesterday and made public today, DIKO expresses concern with a statement made by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the start of the fourth round of Cyprus proximity talks in September as well as some ideas included in unofficial documents presented by his special adviser Alvaro de Soto, who is conducting the talks.
