[09] Cyprus - EU - Joint Parliamentary Committee

Brussels, Oct 9 (CNA) - Time is working against Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and the sooner he realises this the better, European Union enlargement commissioner Gunter Verheugen has said, adding that if Denktash hopes for separate negotiations with the Union and that two Cypriot states could join its ranks, then he has huge illusions.

Speaking today to members of the Joint EU-Cyprus Parliamentary Committee meeting here, Verheugen also said the framework that exists today for a settlement in Cyprus is better than ever before because of the improvement in Greco-Turkish relations, Turkey's priority for EU membership and the new UN peace effort underway.
