    [02] Cyprus - Balkan Chambers meeting

    Nicosia, Jun 5 (CNA) - The Cyprus Chamber of Industry and Commerce (KEVE) is organising a two-day Balkan Chambers meeting in Nicosia, to be attended by delegations and businesspeople from Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Skopje, while Turkey has notified it would not be present.

    KEVE President Vassilis Rologis, who is also President of the Balkan Chambers for 2001, told a press conference today that during the meeting, which begins tomorrow, Cypriot businesspeople would be able to learn more about the Balkan economies and investment opportunities, while the foreign participants would become more accustomed with Cyprus' economy.

    [04] Cyprus - Slovakia - Chief Negotiators - Meeting

    Nicosia, Jun 5 (CNA)-- Cyprus and Slovakia have exchanged here today views and experiences in matters of EU accession negotiations and expressed the need to cooperate more closely in this process, Chief Negotiator for the accession of Cyprus to the EU, George Vassiliou, said after a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Jan Figel.

    Vassiliou said that cooperation between pre-accession countries was of great importance for their EU future and noted that although Slovakia did not belong to the Group of Luxembourg, it had done a lot of progress and was almost close to the countries of the Group of Luxembourg.     [05] AKEL - Parliamentary representative

    Nicosia, Jun 5 (CNA) - Left-wing AKEL's group in the House of Representatives today reelected Andreas Christou as its parliamentary representative.

    Announcing Christou's appointment, AKEL's Spokesman Nicos Katsourides said the party's General Secretary Demetris Christofias had briefed the new deputies, elected during the May 27 parliamentary polls, on developments regarding the election of the new House President. CNA/KST/RG/ÌÊ/2001

    [06] Cyprus - OSCE - Military Conference

    Nicosia, Jun 5 (CNA) -- Issues relating to Cyprus' National Guard, the installations and equipment of its military bases, will be addressed during a four-day Conference of 44 military officers from 27 members states of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) held between 5 - 8 June 2001 in Nicosia.

    According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Defence, today the officers will be briefed on Cyprus Defence Policy and Armed Forces and tomorrow will visit a National Guard's unit and later on each of them will submit a report to the Commander of that unit with their observations and comments.     [07] DIKO - House presidency - AKEL candidacy

    Nicosia, Jun 5 (CNA) - Centre-right Democratic Party (DIKO) today decided to back the candidacy of left-wing AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias for the presidency of the new House of Representatives, which was elected during the May 27 parliamentary polls.

    Speaking after a meeting of DIKO's Central Committee, which lasted about three hours, DIKO President Tassos Papadopoulos said 106 members of the body were in favour of Christofias' candidacy, while four said they would prefer a candidate from their own party and that, if that candidate was not elected, then their parliamentary group should support Christofias.
