[02] Tunisia stresses need to settle regional problems
Nicosia, Nov 3 (CNA) -- Tunisia has expressed its backing for the peaceful
settlement of the Cyprus question, through talks under UN auspices, the
country's Foreign Minister Habit Ben Yahia has said, adding that his
government has always monitored closely developments in Cyprus and has a
firm stand on this issue.
The minister said that regional disputes have to be resolved, especially in
the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the US and expressed the wish to
enhance cooperation and dialogue among the Mediterranean countries.
Yahia, who was speaking at a meeting in Tunis with President Glafcos
Clerides' special envoy Vasos Lysarides, also said bilateral ties should be
further developed, noting that Cyprus can be a bridge between the European
Union and the Arab world as well as a link between the Mediterranean and
the Middle East.
Lysarides delivered a letter by President Clerides for Tunisian Premier
Mohamed Ghannouchi and briefed the Foreign Minister about recent
developments in the UN- led peace effort, now at a standstill because the
Turkish Cypriot leader, backed by Ankara, has withdrawn from the talks.|
