[02] Foreign Minister: Turkey has time to act wisely on Cyprus

Larnaca, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has called on Turkey to act now on Cyprus in a wise manner and send Turkish Cypriot leader back to the negotiating table with a view to find a settlement of the protracted Cyprus question.

The minister, reacting to statements by his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem with regard to Cyprus' accession to the European Union, suggested that Ankara's policy on Cyprus has failed and its options are narrowed down, unless it acts in time to help find a solution.

"Cem's remarks before the Turkish parliament indicate that Ankara's foreign policy with regard to Cyprus has failed and this puts Turkey's political leadership in front of a dilemma, whose two alternatives are bad," Kasoulides said here today on his way to Brussels to participate in the Euro-Mediterranean ministerial meeting.|

[03] Greek - Turkish Cypriots air views on a common future

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Future prospects for Cyprus, in relation to the UN peace effort and the country's bid to join the European Union, were at the core of a bicommunal discussion here Saturday, during which politicians from both sides of the divide outlined different perspectives but agreed that attempts to reunite Cyprus is the top priority for everybody.

The public debate was organized by the United Democrats party, under the title "Cyprus: in search of a common future", with the participation of party president George Vasiliou and Turkish Cypriot politician Mustafa Akinci, former leader of the Turkish Cypriot Communal Liberation party, and Turkish journalist Mehmet Ali Birant.

Speakers at the debate said that the current division of Cyprus is no option and should become a thing of the past, but they differed on the fallout of the country's accession to the EU, if there is no political settlement prior to membership.

There was also a call on the EU to be more forthcoming towards Turkey and fix a date for the start of accession negotiations, in a bid to encourage Ankara to make some kind of move on Cyprus.

It was noted that Cyprus' future lies with Europe and both sides can and should work together to create a better future for themselves, taking into consideration that fears they may now have would dissipate once Cyprus is part of the EU, because as one foreign ambassador pointed out Europe does not allow discrimination and no discount is permitted when it comes to respect of human rights, opportunities for all and equal treatment.|
