United Nations, Jun 13 (CNA) -- The demand by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, to get recognition for his self-styled "state" in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, is the major block preventing the two parties from coming together in the face-to-face talks in Cyprus, said last night, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Turkey fears possible recourses against it in Europe

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Turkey's acknowledgment that it fears it may be faced with a mounting number of recourses against its tactics and policies with regard to human rights violations in Cyprus, is an important development, Greek Cypriot lawyer Achilleas Demetriades has said.

Speaking after Wednesday's debate at the Council of Europe on the execution of a European Court of Human Rigths judgment against Ankara, he told CNA this fear should be turned into a "nightmare for Turkey with a view to creating a cost for Ankara" which continues to occupy illegally part of Cyprus and prevents the legal owners from using and enjoying their properties.
