    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- ''We are looking forward to a very productive week both here (in Cyprus) and in Copenhagen'', US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston, told the press after meeting President Glafcos Clerides here today.

    President sees Alvaro de Soto

    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides had a long meeting today with UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, as part of fresh UN efforts to conclude an agreement prior to this week's European Union summit in Copenhagen.

    The meeting, attended by their respective aides to the UN-sponsored talks, lasted about 90 minutes.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    The weather on Tuesday (Dec 10) will be locally cloudy with showers, probably thundery and light snow over the highest peaks of the Troodos range. Winds will prevail west to northwest moderate 4 bf and the sea will persist moderate to rough. The maximum temperature will range from 7 degrees Celsius over the mountains to 19 degrees along the coastal areas. The minimum temperature will range from zero degrees over the mountains to 9 along the coastal areas.

    The weather on Wednesday (Dec 11) will be mainly fine but a light shower and light snow over Troodos cannot be excluded. The wind will prevail northwest moderate 4 bf and the state of sea will be moderate. The maximum temperature will range form 5 degrees over the highest peaks of Troodos to 17 along the coastal areas. Local ground frost may be noted on Wednesday to Thursday night.

    On Thursday (Dec 12) and Friday (Dec 13), the weather will be mainly fine but cold. The temperature will note a further fall on Thursday, and on Thursday to Friday local night ground frost is expected. A temperature rise is expected on Friday.

    Pat Cox: no external veto on Cyprus' accession

    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- The decision on Cyprus' accession to the European Union will be taken at this week's summit in Copenhagen with no external veto, President of the European Parliament Pat Cox said here today.

    Speaking to the press, he said President Glafcos Clerides during their meeting today outlined to him some issues he would like to negotiate on with regard to a UN proposal on a comprehensive settlement the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides received last month.

    Cox: Bring reconciling Cyprus into reconciling Europe

    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) European Parliament President Pat Cox called on leaders in Cyprus to ''seize the moment and bring a reconciling Cyprus into a reconciling Europe''.

    In a speech at the Economist conference ''Third Cyprus Summit - Countdown to accession'', Cox expressed the view that the EU can do business with Turkey's new leadership and Justice and Development leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

    He described this year in the EU as a ''very special year'', adding that ''the year began with the launching of the Euro and then the Convention on the future of Europe, it is also the year when Europe's rendezvous with reconciliation must be decided this week in Copenhagen''.

    Annan says revised text on Cyprus to be ready shortly

    United Nations, Dec 9 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told CNA that the UN are working on a revised text of his Cyprus solution plan, which will be ready shortly.

    Annan also said he does have any plans to go to Copenhagen for the European Council, which will decide whether Cyprus and nine other candidate countries will join the EU ranks.

    Revitalisation of Omerye area in Nicosia begins

    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) - European Parliament President Pat Cox expressed hope that the revitalisation project of the Omerye area in Nicosia will signal the restoration of a city that will be reunited.

    Cox was addressing a gathering to mark the commencement of the revitalisation project of Omerye area in the old part of the walled capital, funded by the European Union through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

    He added ''our big hope politically is that, as we begin this act of restoration and as it shall continue in each part of the city and on each side, that it will in the end be a restoration of a city that will be reunited''.

    EU to financially assist Cyprus' northern areas after solution

    Nicosia, Dec 9 CNA) - The European Union will assist the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus after a solution is reached, with a financial package of 206 million Euros for the years 2004 to 2006, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Cyprus, Adriaan van der Meer, said today.

    Brussels, Dec 9 (CNA) - As of today, Cyprus is officially the first candidate country to complete accession negotiations with the European Union (EU).

    The completion of the accession negotiations took place during a meeting in Brussels between Danish President of the Council Per Stig Moeller, European Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen and Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides, who was congratulated by the two EU officials.

    Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) - The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto said he does not know when Kofi Annan will deliver to the two sides in Cyprus a revised text of his solution plan.
