    UN Secretary General conveys letter to leaders in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 10 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is conveying today a letter to President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    The letter will be delivered by his special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, as part of his shuttle-diplomacy meetings he has been having with Clerides and Denktash in the past few days.

    President Clerides receives revised UN peace plan

    Nicosia, Dec 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides received here today a revised peace plan for a solution to the Cyprus problem put forward by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    The revised plan was handed over by the UN chief's special adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, during a 25-minute-long meeting at the Presidential Palace.

    The UN envoy said he was going to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Dec 10 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan conveyed today to the two communities in Cyprus a revision of his proposed Basis for Agreement on a Comprehensive Settlement of the Cyprus Problem.

    In a letter to President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash the Secretary-General "asks the two leaders to give the revision the most urgent consideration with a view to reaching a decisive conclusion this week, so that a reunited Cyprus may accede to the European Union. The Secretary-General has asked the two sides to be available in Copenhagen later this week should that prove necessary".

    Cyprus has a rendez-vous with history. It should not be missed, the Secretary-General says in his letter.

    A UN press release issued in Nicosia says the Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto delivered this morning letters from the Secretary-General ''to H. E. Mr Glafcos Clerides, the Greek Cypriot leader, and H. E. Mr Rauf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader''.

    ''With these letters he conveyed a revision of his proposed Basis for Agreement on a Comprehensive Settlement of the Cyprus Problem, which had been conveyed to the two sides on 11 November 2002'', the prese release says.

    Brussels, Dec 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus will enter the European Union (EU) with or without a solution to the Cyprus problem, EU Foreign Ministers agreed Monday night.

    Speaking during a dinner of the EU Foreign Ministers, Danish Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Council, Per Stig Moller, after listening to the positions of many of his counterparts, asked whether anyone objects to Cyprus accession to the EU without a settlement to its political problem.

    Brussels, Dec 10 (CNA) Most European Union countries support a Franco-German proposal to open membership talks with Turkey on July 1, 2005 if it passes a review in 2004, despite Ankara's demand for an earlier, firmer date.

    During Mondays discussion on the Turkish candidacy during the dinner of the EU Foreign Ministers, most countries seemed to incline towards the Franco-German proposal which will officially be submitted during the Copenhagen European Council.

    Clerides will sign solution if it serves public interest, says spokesman

    Nicosia, Dec 10 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides will only sign a solution of the Cyprus question if he is convinced this will be in the interest of the people of Cyprus, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    Speaking to the press after the President took delivery of a revised UN proposal on a comprehensive settlement, he said there has been an initial assessment of the proposal and a note on the proposed amendments will be prepared for the members of the National Council, which convenes in early evening at an extraordinary meeting, to discuss developments.

    UN envoy: It's up to the parties to decide on revised text

    Nicosia, Dec 10 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, said it was up to the two parties on the island to decide what to do with the revised text the UN Secretary General submitted today.

    He said there is still time for negotiations to take place for a Cyprus settlement before the Copenhagen European Union summit.

    He told the press after a second meeting Tuesday with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, that he still did not have the reaction of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash but he was expecting to get that soon.
