    Paralimni and Famagusta people welcome the Olympic Torch

    Nicosia, Jul 9 (CNA) -- People of Paralimni and Famagusta district, on the east of Cyprus, welcomed warmly today the Olympic Torch at a special ceremony at Saint George's Square in Paralimni, in the presence of the local authorities and other officials.

    Twelve priestesses dressed in white and blue danced in honour of the Torch while the Paralimni Municipality band played the Olympic Anthem with the crowd that thronged the square bursting into a sponteneous applaud.

    Nicosia, Jul 9 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government wants to reach the best possible compromise with the European Commission with regard to a Commission proposal on direct trade between Brussels and Cyprus' Turkish-ccupied areas.     Olympic Torch leaves Cyprus

    Larnaca, Jul 9 (CNA) -- The Olympic Torch left Cyprus at 1615 local time for Crete, after its two-day stay in Cyprus where it traveled to all the free towns of Cyprus.

    Athens 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulou-Daskalaki who arrived here today to escort the Olympic Torch back to its homeland, Greece, expressed satisfaction with the welcoming of the Torch by Cypriots.

    Key official interest rates remain unchanged

    Nicosia, Jul 9 (CNA) -- The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided today to maintain unchanged the key official interest rates of the Central Bank, that is the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility, at 5.5% and 3.5% respectively.

    Announcing the decision, Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou said the public deficit rate is the most important problem which the Cyprus economy is facing which resulted with Cyprus' participation in the Excessive Deficit Procedure.''

    Ghana's Ambassador expresses wish for Cyprus unification soon

    Nicosia, Jul 9 (CNA) Ghanas new Ambassador to Cyprus, Lieutenant General Benedictus Kodzo Akafia expressed the wish that Cyprus unification should come sooner than later.

    Akafia, who is based in Cairo, was speaking at a ceremony during which he presented his credentials to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos who expressed the gratitude and appreciation of the government and the people of Cyprus ''for the consistent and unwavering support of Ghana to the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus and for our just cause for the peaceful reunification of our country and its people.''
