House of Commons to examine British policy on Cyprus

London, Jul 25 (CNA) -- The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee has decided to conduct an inquiry into the United Kingdom's policy towards Cyprus in the light of the April 24 referenda on the plan for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus question, proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Cypriot Minister says December not deadline for Cyprus

Larnaca, Jul 25 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said that December 2004, when the European Union will decide whether to give Turkey a date to commence accession talks, is important for the Cyprus problem but not a deadline.

Iacovou was replying to a question whether there would be other opportunities for Cyprus if there were no solution to the Cyprus question by December. He said that Turkey's EU bid starts in December but does not end there, noting that Turkey will be subjected to scrutinising, in which Cyprus will participate.

''Therefore, I don't believe that it is possible for one to speak of a final date for the Cyprus question. It would be a serious date but I don't think it is unique,'' Iacovou added.
