  • [01] GOVERNMENT TURKISH CONFESSION REACTION

The government has expressed shock about a self-confession by a Turk, who said he killed ten Greek Cypriots during Turkeys 1974 invasion. It also pointed out that the testimony has to be investigated. Attila Olgac, a Turkish actor who served in Cyprus during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, has told a TV show in Turkey that he killed ten Greek Cypriots in cold blood.

The government, its Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said, will take all necessary steps with regard to this issue. We express our shock about the confession of the Turkish actor Olgac, which reveals the brutality and the barbarity of Turkey in 1974, as well as the fact that Turkey has violated international law and specifically the Geneva Convention, Stephanou said.

The Government Spokesman pointed out that the confession stresses Turkeys obligation to fully implement a decision of the European Court of Human Rights, in the 4th Interstate Application of Cyprus v Turkey, and in the cases of Greek Cypriot missing persons versus Turkey.

    [02] IACOVOU NAMI MEETING

George Iacovou, Presidential Commissioner, and Ozdil Nami, advisor of the Turkish Cypriot leader, have accomplished an important job by reviewing the issues which have arisen during talks on governance, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.

Talks are taking place between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities since September last year, to find a political settlement in Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Stephanou said that Iacovou and Nami noted down the several topics discussed during the direct negotiations on the issue of governance and classified the convergences and the divergences on that issue. They have done a very important job, and next week they will meet again to conclude it, Stephanou added.
