  • [01] PRESIDENT - OSCE SUMMIT

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias will participate in the OSCE`s Summit that will take place 1-2 December in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The Summit will be attended by heads of state and government by the 56 OSCE member states. The last OSCE Summit of heads of state and government took place 11 years ago.

The Summit agenda includes the reaffirmation of OSCE commitments, the recommitment of OSCE participating States to an inclusive Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian security community, and the redoubling of collective efforts to address challenges to human rights, and to combat new transnational threats.

Cyprus is one of the 35 signatory states of the ``Final Act`` concluded in Helsinki in 1975, and was an active participant in the process of the then Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), which on 1 January 1995 became an international organisation under the name of Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Today, with 56 States from Europe, Central Asia and America, the OSCE is the world`s largest regional security organization, aiming at comprehensive and co-operative security to a region that stretches from Vancouver to Vladivostok. OSCE`s acquis consists of general values and principles and more detailed commitments within its three dimensions: politico-military, economic and environmental, and human dimension. The Organization carries out a wide range of activities across the various dimensions, in order to promote co-operation and assist participating states in meeting their commitments.

Cyprus attaches great importance to the Treaty on Open Skies, an accord on unarmed observation flights over the territory of OSCE participating states, that is closely associated with the Organization as a confidence and security-building measure that provides enhanced transparency in military activities. Cyprus is still blocked from joining the Treaty by Turkey which is one participating state of the Organization.

As a member of the EU, Cyprus continues to be actively involved in the work of the OSCE. It supports the need for implementation of the commitments of the participating states and recognizes the important role of the OSCE in addressing traditional as well as new challenges and threats to security.

With its geographical position and longstanding experience, Cyprus actively contributes in reinforcing the OSCE - Mediterranean Partnership.

    [02] HOUSE - MISSING PERSONS

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has assured that the House will continue its close cooperation on the issue of missing persons with the government and the Committee of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons, until the fate of all missing persons is determined.

Addressing an event organised by the House for the missing persons, Garoyian said that this issue is the most tragic aspect of the Cyprus problem and that the House approaches it with great sensitivity.

``Today`s event aims at promoting the significance and dimensions of the issue and points out the need to speed up procedures to determine the fate of each missing person,`` he said, adding that ``today we declare once again that efforts to establish the fate of our missing persons will never cease or fade out until the fate of all missing persons is established.``

Garoyian said that unfortunately procedures are slow due to the negative stance of the Turkish side.

    [03] CYPRUS - CHINA - HEALTH

Cyprus and China will sign an agreement on health matters, during a visit to the island by the Chinese Deputy Minister of Health Li Xi between November 29 and December 1.

During his visit, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministry of Health of the Peoples Republic of China will sign the action plan on health and Medical Science.

The Chinese official will meet on Tuesday the Cypriot Minister of Health Christos Patsalides and there will be a meeting between a delegation of the Chinese Ministry of Health and the Cypriot Ministry.

After the meetings there will be statements by the two Ministers to the media.

    [04] COMMISSION - ECONOMY

After the negative record of 2009, when the GDP dropped 1.7%, the Cypriot economy returned to positive growth rates in 2010, which are expected to accelerate over the next two years and approach the average of the Eurozone countries.

According to European Commission projections, Cyprus` GDP will rise by 0.5% in 2010, 1.5% in 2011 and 2.2% in 2012.

Public deficit, despite the global financial crisis, will not worsen in 2010 compared to 2009, when it was around 6% of the GDP. It is expected to reach 5.9% in 2010, 5.7% in 2011 and 5.7% in 2012. All forecasts for 2012 are made based on the 2011 scenario, namely without additional measures.

Furthermore, public debt is expected to rise in 2010, reaching 62.2% of the GDP. In 2011 it will reach 65.2% and it is expected to reach 68.4% in 2012, remaining beneath the average public debt of Eurozone countries.
