The Republic of Cyprus, in the context of the Second Protocol of the Hague Convention, has recently managed to give monuments the status of heightened protection in case of an armed conflict.

According to an official press release, this was achieved on November 22, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, during the fifth regular meeting of the Committee for the Second Protocol of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in the case of armed conflict.

The Committee comprises twelve member states, which are elected by the assembly of member states. The Republic of Cyprus ratified the Second Protocol in 2001 and was elected a member of the Committee from 2005 to 2011. It was also elected member of the six-member panel of the Committee in the positions of rapporteur and vice president for five consecutive years, from 2005 to 2010.

The Republic of Cyprus has submitted three applications concerning the archaeological site of the Neolithic settlement of Chirokitia, Paphos including Kato Paphos and Kouklia or Palepaphos, and the ten churches in the Troodos areas with murals. These monuments are already on the UNESCO list of world heritage.
