  • [01] PRESIDENT - MOSCOW - COOPERATION

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said Friday Cyprus encourages joint collaborative efforts with Moscow City in all aspects.

In his message at the 2nd Moscow Cyprus Investment Forum, in Limassol, read by Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides, President Christofias said the forum provides the opportunity to underline the very strong ties of friendship and co-operation that exist between Cyprus and the Russian Federation in the economic, political and social areas.

It takes place, he said, after the recent visit of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev to Cyprus where they signed a number of documents which establish a solid base for the expansion of the already strong business relations between the two countries with a forward-looking mindset.

President Christofias remarked the various conventions and agreements signed, especially on the avoidance of double taxation, the Programme of Action for the next three years and memoranda on new, joint projects that we will be developing, materialize our joint vision for a sustainable and fruitful relationship between our two countries.

President Christofias added that Cyprus is among Russias leading international investors of strategic importance and one of the main channels for attracting financial flows to the Russian Federation.

He also pointed out that the many years of collaboration between our business communities have accumulated invaluable experience and developed specialized financial and professional services infrastructures, which can act as a global access point for investments in Russia via Cyprus.

President Christofias also said that Foreign Direct Investment in Cyprus is extended to the tourism and shipping sectors, while opportunities for collaboration in information and communications technology through industry-academia frameworks are wide open.

Reminding that Cyprus is a member state of the European Union and the Eurozone and complies with EU regulations, President Christofias said our country is also included in the OECD white list as a jurisdiction which has substantially implemented the internationally agreed tax standards and offers a strong regional platform for a variety of banking products and financial services, including Investment Funds.

We encourage the joint collaborative efforts of Cyprus with Moscow City in all aspects: legislation, infrastructure for banking and financial services, development of cultural and historical ties and promotion of investments in Russia via Cyprus, and vice-versa, the President underlined.

Encouraging the participants to continue developing Cyprus Russia business activity, fostering the economic co-operation and friendship between the two countries, President Christofias concluded by noting the Cyprus Government, in close collaboration with the Government of the Russian Federation, will be a strong supporter of your efforts.

    [02] UKRAINE - CYPRUS ISSUE

Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Ukrainian parliament Oleh Bilorus assured on Friday that Ukraine`s position on the Cyprus issue is that the problem must be solved according to international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

Bilorus is heading a delegation of the Committee, which is visiting Cyprus at the invitation of the House of Representatives.

The delegation was received on Friday by House President Marios Garoyian, who expressed gratitude for the steadfast and principled stance of Ukraine concerning the Cyprus problem.

He noted that Turkish intransigence has not allowed for progress, adding that Turkey still disregards international law, UN resolutions and its obligations towards the EU. Garoyian assured that the Greek Cypriot side remains dedicated to reaching a functional and viable solution, which will safeguard the human rights and political freedoms of all its citizens.

[03] MINISTER OF HEALTH - GREECE

Cypriot Minister of Health Christos Patsalides will be paying an official visit to Greece from December 12 to 14, at the invitation of Greek Minister of Health and Social Solidarity Andreas Loverdos.

During the visit, the finalisation of an agreement between Cyprus and Greece will be announced. The agreement provides for the monitoring of a programme on behalf of Cyprus for Cypriot doctors, with the formation of a special council, which will supervise and control their proper training. The Council will also undertake to upgrade the training of doctors in Cyprus.

Furthermore, a protocol for the twinning of the Nicosia General Hospital and the Attikon University General Hospital will be signed, paving the way for the exchange of medical staff, experience and knowledge, and participation in joint programmes.
