  • [01] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS PROBLEM - "COMPENSATION COMMISSION"

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that President Demetris Christofias has a comprehensive strategy on the Cyprus problem.

He also pointed out that a political settlement has not been reached yet because of the stance of the Turkish side.

Stephanou said that President Christofias policy focuses on the bicommunal talks for the settlement of the Cyprus problem, on moves on the international scene, on building alliances and on seeking international support, both within and outside the EU, to help create the preconditions that would exert pressure on Turkey to change its stance and pave the way for a solution.

Stephanou said that Christofias policy has yielded concrete results. We have not reached a settlement of the Cyprus problem because the Turkish stance has not allowed this, but this must not lead us to underestimate the results of the Presidents policy on the Cyprus problem.

He noted that for four years the Cyprus question was in a stalemate, the UN and the international community were not concerned with the Cyprus problem and in 21 days after his election in 2008, President Christofias began consultations which led to the start of negotiations which continue to date.

Referring to a self-styled property commission, set up in the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Stephanou said that the commission cannot ensure that the refugees will receive adequate compensation nor can it safeguard their right to property.

It is for this reason that we advise the refugees not to seek any compensation through this so called commission, because they will not get what they think they will and most importantly they will lose their properties once and for all, he noted.

Stephanou said that the issue of properties constitutes part of the Cyprus problem and it can be solved through an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem.

This is where the government focuses, this is where the President focuses being the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side so that we will reach a settlement the soonest, Stephanou noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. President Christofias is engaged in talks with the Turkish Cypriot community to find a settlement to reunite the country.

[02] UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleh Bilorus has stressed that the Cyprus problem must be resolved in accordance with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

According to an official announcement, a Parliamentary Committee delegation from the Ukraine, led by Bilorus, was received Friday by the President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian.

    [03] HUNGARIAN PM - CYPRUS - VISIT

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, will pay a working visit to Cyprus, on Monday 13 December.

Orban will have a tete-a-tete meeting with President Demetris Christofias at the Presidential Palace. There will be a working lunch and afterwards statements to the press.

The President of Hungary will depart from Cyprus on Monday afternoon.

During his visit he will be accompanied by his Spokesman Peter Szijjarto, Foreign Policy Advisor on EU and External Economic Affairs Peter Gottfried, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (responsible for EU matters) Eniko Gyori and Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to Cyprus Csaba Lovro

[04] BRITISH SHADOW MINISTER - CYPRUS PROBLEM

British Shadow Minister for Europe Wayne David has expressed hope that progress will be made in efforts for a Cyprus settlement, noting that all have a supportive role to play but the lead role must be between the Cypriots themselves.

The answer lies in the hands of the Cypriot people. It is between the leaders of Cyprus and the leaders in the north that the agreement is going to be reached, he noted.
