He added that everyone should be patient so that the truth could shine regarding the deadly explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base, the shockwave of which destroyed the island`s main power station, and those responsible are held accountable.

President Christofias congratulated the new Ministers and thanked the outgoing Cabinet, noting that ``our homeland is going through crucial times`` and that it was necessary to work towards the solution of the Cyprus issue and the reunification of the island, to take measures to tackle the consequences of the global financial crisis and the tragic event at the Naval Base, to fulfill duties concerning Cyprus` EU presidency in the second half of 2012, and to restore the energy balance, inter alia.

    [03] HOUSE PRESIDENT GREEK MPS

The return of Famagusta does not mean abandoning the other occupied areas of Cyprus, but will create a positive climate for the success of the efforts for a Cyprus settlement, said on Friday Speaker of the Parliament of Cyprus Giannakis Omirou, after meeting with a delegation of the Greek Parliament, and Mayors of Greek towns

The delegation is visiting Cyprus at the invitation of occupied Famagustas Mayor and municipal council and will attend a series of anti-occupation events marking the 37th anniversary since the seizure of the town by the Turkish troops in the summer of 1974.

The House Speaker said that the international and European community gave priority to the issue of the return of Famagusta, because the city remained vacant for 37 years, becoming a real ghost city.

Head of the bipartisan delegation, PASOK MP Pemi Zouni, said that they are participating in the anti-occupation events for Famagusta, with the hope that these events will soon be unnecessary, because the Cyprus problem will be solved in a proper way. She reiterated at the same time, that the Greek parliamentary parties support and keep pace with the struggle of Cyprus.

[04] US SENATOR TURKEY - OCCUPATION

Senator Ben Cardin, Co-Chairman of the Helsinki Committee in the US Senate, has called on Turkey to terminate the illegal occupation of part of Cyprus and allow the return of the legitimate citizens of Famagusta to their town, as a step in the right direction.

In an intervention to mark the 37th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Cardin praised the leadership of President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and noted that his efforts were being undermined by Turkish intransigence and the inflow of Turkish settlers, which outnumber the Turkish Cypriots two to one.

Referring to Famagusta, Cardin said the once flourishing hub now resembles a ghost town and Turkish troops prevent the return of the legitimate citizens.

He said that, despite UN resolutions on Cyprus, Turkey continues to illegally occupy a third of Cyprus` territory, and that it was high time for Turkey to terminate its occupation and allow the citizens of Famagusta to rebuild their town.
