  • [01] Nicosia Assize Court acquits all defendants in HELIOS air crash case

    Nicosia Assize Court accepted today a recommendation by the Law Office to dismiss all charges against the defedants in connection with the case relating to the 2005 HELIOS air crash which killed all 121 persons on board.

    The Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus requested on Monday the suspension of the prosecution of all individuals and HELIOS airline that faced charges with regard to the crash of the HELIOS Airways Boeing 737-31S into Grammatikos mountain, north of the Greek capital Athens, on 14 August 2005, causing the death of all 121 people on board. Nicosia Assize Court dismissed all charges and acquitted all defendants. Helios Airways as a legal person and four officials, Andreas Drakos Helios Executive Chairman, Demetris Panatzis Managing Director, George Kikkides Flight Operations Director and Ianco Stoimenov Chief Pilot faced charges of manslaughter and causing the death of all 121 people on board by reckless, dangerous and careless action.

    [02] FM participates in FAC meeting of the EU

    Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis will participate Monday in the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) of the European Union, in Brussels.

    According to an official press release issued here today, during the FAC meeting the Ministers will discuss developments in Syria, the Middle East Peace Process, Iraq, the Eastern Partnership and Mali. Council Conclusions are to be adopted for Syria, the Eastern Partnership and Mali. Moreover, on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council, the Cypriot Foreign Minister will attend the 3rd Northern Dimension Ministerial Meeting.

    [03] Cyprus participates in agriculture meeting organized by Chinese in Italy

    Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Egli Pantelaki paid a working visit to Rome, where she participated in a meeting organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China to strengthen and promote the cooperation in the field of agriculture between China and six Mediterranean countries (Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Malta).

    According to an official press release, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China Hui Liangyu. The Cypriot official thanked the Chinese for their initiative to organize the meeting and informed them about the current state of agriculture in Cyprus, noting specific areas of action to strengthen the cooperation between the participating countries in the agricultural sector.

    During the meeting, participants aknowlegded that there are many possibilities for enhancing cooperation in agriculture between them and issued a joint statement in which they mentioned specific areas of cooperation in the field of agriculture.

    [04] Presidential elections - Final results island wide

    The results island wide in the first round of the presidential elections that took place Sunday with 100% votes counted are: Nicos Anastasiades 45.46%, Stavros Malas 26.91%, Giorgos Lillikas 24.93%, Praxoulla Antoniadou - Kyriakou 0.61%, Lakis Ioannou 0.29%, George Charalambous 0.88%, Loucas Stavrou 0.05%, Andreas Efstratiou 0.10%, Costas Kyriacou (Utopos) 0.16%, Solon Gregoriou 0.18%, Makaria Antri Stylianou 0.43%.

    A candidate needs to secure 50% plus one vote to be elected. If no candidate secures this majority, the two candidates to secure most of the votes will go into a run off election. Anastasiades and Malas will be the two candidates for next Sunday's second round.
