[01] NATO willing to monitor a "no fly zone" over Cyprus

NATO Secretary General Javier Solana said yesterday that the Alliance would be prepared to monitor a "no fly zone" in Cyprus.

Replying to questions on security issues at the Washington National Press Club, Mr. Solana stated that NATO does not think that the Cyprus government's decision to buy the S-300 missiles is a good decision.

"We have to find formulas to make their deployment unnecessary", he said.

Asked to comment on NATO's willingness to play a role in a no fly zone in Cyprus, Mr. Solana replied that "we are prepared to monitor, if necessary, a no fly zone or something of that nature".

Nevertheless he pointed out that the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Cyprus was not for NATO to decide.

" NATO would just be implementing, if necessary, some of the ideas that may be discussed in other fora" he said.

[02] Slowdown in economic growth affects labour market.

The labour market was affected by the slowdown in economic growth in 1996 compared to the previous year, according to the latest figures published by the Department of Statistics and Research.

Unemployment rose to 3,1 per cent of the labour force and the number of foreign workers employed in Cyprus rose from 15.000 to 167.000.

Employment increased by 1%, mainly due to the tertiary sector while a number of important economic sectors such as Agriculture, Construction and Manufacturing either remained stagnant or decreased.

There was a fall in the rate of increase of wages for the fourth year running.

[03] Neolithic fortifications revealed at the site of Nissia

The latest archaeological excavations at the Neolithic site of Nissia at the coastal town of Paralimni have revealed fortifications of the longest extent found so far at any other Neolithic settlement in Cyprus.

The digs showed that the fortifications, measuring 83 metres, surrounded the settlement in the shape of a horseshoe. The settlement was protected on the eastern side by the enormous rocks of the seashore.

The impressive finds include beautifully carved amulets, stone tools and weapons, vases and two anthropomorphic idols.
