[01] US continues to support UN efforts to promote a resolution of the Cyprus problem

Replying to a question in relation to the G8 statement and the recent UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus, US State Department Spokesman James Foley reiterated during his daily briefing on July 2, his country's continuing support for UN efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

"We certainly continue to support UN efforts to promote a resolution of the Cyprus problem, and the United States is very clear that we continue to support a bizonal, bicommunal federation", he said.

[02] Portuguese State Secretary: Cyprus problem must not be an obstacle in EU negotiating process

Portugal supports Cyprus accession to the EU and is particularly interested in seeing that the political problem will not be an obstacle for the implementation of the island's European Union negotiating process, the Portuguese State Secretary for European Affairs Mr Francisco Seixas da Costa stated on Friday.

Speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Mr Da Costa said that the "political question is at the end of the road but it is not a question that could create any kind of obstacle for this process". It is Portugal's "intention to pursue this line" in its presidency, he added.

The Portuguese official said that the idea of his visit to Cyprus was to present the Portuguese presidency of the EU, which will start in January 2000. "Enlargement is at the top of the agenda of the Union nowadays and it will also be at the top of the agenda during the Portuguese presidency," he said.

Mr Da Costa stressed his country's willingness to give support to the negotiating process and to Cyprus' preparation to become a member of the European Union. "There are great possibilities that during the Portuguese Presidency in the year 2000, a definition of the date for the first enlargement will take place," he said.

[03] Spain is strongly in favour of Cyprus' accession to the European Union

"As a Mediterranean country Spain is very strongly in favour of Cyprus' accession to the European Union because we feel the need to balance the Union and reinforce the Mediterranean dimension of the European Union", Spain's Secretary of State for Foreign Policy and the European Union Mr Ramon de Miguel, has stated.

Speaking to journalists last Friday after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Mr de Miguel pointed out that until now there has been no significant problem regarding Cyprus' accession. "The only problem that exists is the fact of the Turkish Cypriots not participating in the negotiating process", he said.

The Spanish official noted that "the coming months offer a window of opportunity for achieving that goal that we all have, of a federal, bicommunal, bizonal solution of the Cyprus problem".

"We all know that at the end of the year the European Council that will meet in Helsinki will make a new re-assessment of the enlargement process", he said and expressed the hope that the "Cyprus problem will evolve in a positive way so that we can reaffirm the process of incorporating Cyprus into the European Union".

Mr De Miquel said that he will be meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leadership on Monday to express "our strong resolve in terms of having a solution for Cyprus according to the resolutions of the United Nations".

"We will put pressure on them to make a gesture and be positive in coming talks that will open in autumn", he added.

Mr De Miguel also held talks with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides during which he reiterated his country's strong support for Cyprus' accession to the European Union.

[04] Russia supports solution based on UN Security Council resolutions

Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou had a meeting last Friday with the Russian Alternate Foreign Minister Mr Aleksander Avdeyev with whom he discussed several issues, including the recent developments in Kosovo, the Cyprus problem and the recent meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey in New York.

Referring to Cyprus, the Russian Alternate Foreign Minister reiterated his country's support for a political solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

[05] France hopes that the two sides in Cyprus will respond to the call for talks

"Adopting on 29 June two resolutions on Cyprus, the UN Security Council urges once again the two sides on the island to resume talks without preconditions, on the basis of the UN resolutions. We hope/wish that the two sides will respond positively to the invitation of the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General", a French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stated on July 1.

"France reminds that the basis of a settlement exists and it is known: it relies in the establishment of a bizonal and bicommunal federation", the statement says adding that "it is up to the sides to assume their responsibilities."
