[01] Joyce Quin: Turkey has an obligation to implement the judgement in
Loizidou vs Turkey
The British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Ms
Joyce Quin , asked to make a statement in the House of Commons on 5 July,
on the British Government's policy in respect of the Loizidou vs Turkey
judgement by the European Court of Human Rights, stated the following:
"Responsibility for implementing the judgement in Loizidou vs Turkey lies
with Turkey. We take such responsibilities seriously, as with all
obligations in the Council of Europe and expect other members to do
likewise. We continue to make clear to Turkey, including in the Committee
of Ministers' Deputies, the need to respect the Court's judgement."
In her written statement Ms Quin also said that "the Chairman of the
Committee of Ministers' Deputies wrote to the Turkish Foreign Minister on
22 June requesting information on how Turkey intended to satisfy its
obligations in this case. The government fully supported this action".
[02] Tourism, Migration and Travel Statistics 1998
In 1998 the movement of travellers to and from Cyprus recorded an increase
compared to the previous year.
According to the annual report "Tourism, Migration and Travel Statistics
1998", published by the Department of Statistics and Research, total
arrivals of travellers reached 2.871.042 recording an increase of 8,5 per
cent and departures totalled 2.870.465 recording an increase of 8,4 percent
compared to 1997.
Visitors arriving to Cyprus increased by 7,4 per cent to 2.356.949 persons
in 1998 compared to 2.193.532. in 1997. In 1998 excursionists totalled
134.243 persons compared to 105.532 in 1997.
Tourists increased by 6,5 per cent and reached 2.222.706 in 1998. The
United Kingdom remained the major source of tourism to the island with a
share of 45,7 per cent in the tourist traffic, while Germany came second
with a 9,4 per cent followed by Russia with 7,9 per cent , Sweden with 5,1
per cent, Switzerland with 3,8 per cent and Greece with 3,2 per cent.
