Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-07-08Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Thursday, 8 July 1999CONTENTS[01] Loizidou case to be discussed at a higher Council of Europe levelTurkey's non-compliance with a European Court of Human Rights decision, relating to the case of Titina Loizidou, will from now on be dealt with at the weekly meetings of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.This was decided unanimously at a meeting in Strasbourg on Tuesday of the Committee of Deputy Ministers. In the past, the matter was taken up at special committee meetings which dealt exclusively with human rights issues. The first weekly discussion on the matter is due to take place on 8-9 September. The Committee reviewed the situation in the light of a letter the President of the Committee of Ministers, Icelandic Foreign Minister Halldor Asgrimsson sent to his Turkish counterpart on 22 June requesting clarifications regarding Turkey's refusal to comply with the decision of the Court of Human Rights. The Court had ordered Turkey to allow Loizidou unhindered access to her property in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus and pay damages amounting to more than 800.000 US dollars by October 1998. Should Turkey not respond to the letter or should its response be evasive, the Committee will have no alternative but to look into the possibility of issuing a resolution with a more severe wording to press on with the need to implement the decision. [02] Irish MP's in CyprusThe accession of Cyprus to the EU will enhance the island's influence and it's economic and political power, Irish MP Bernard Durkan, said yesterday.Durkan is leading a five-member delegation of the joint Committee on European Affairs of the Parliament of Ireland, which is on a four-day visit to Cyprus. Speaking after a meeting of the delegation with Cyprus House President Spyros Kyprianou, Durkan said Cyprus and Ireland have a lot in common, politically, historically and in terms of size. He noted that the visit of the Irish MP's is taking place in the context of Cyprus' accession process. "We can learn from you and perhaps you might learn a little from us", he said.
