A reporter asked if the firing could not be connected to retired General Nurettin Ersin, who left the island on 17 November. Eroglu said: ``The incident occurred at 03:50. General Ersin left Tymbou at 11:00''.

[04] Title: ``Brigade said ready to throw Greek Cypriots into sea''

According to KIBRIS (19.11.98) the 14th Armoured Brigade Command, serving under the structure of the Turkish occupation Forces in Cyprus, has been presented with a banner for its achievements and ability to fulfill any task entrusted to it.

The banner, viewed as a sacred possession of the Turkish nation and a symbol of honour for the Turkish Armed Forces, was handed over to the 14th Armoured Brigade Command yesterday.

After the banner was brought to the ceremonial ground, flags were hoisted to the accompaniment of the Turkish national anthem.

After a reading of the history of the 14th Brigade and a biography of Brigade Commander Brigadier General Zekai Babuccuoglu, General Ozkok deputy Chief of Staff, representing President Demirel, and a handed the banner to general Babucuoglu.

General Ozkok said: ``The way you received it now, you in turn will hand it over to the next commander with its honour and purity intact. In the name of the President of the Turkish Republic, I am handing this secret trust over to you. Let it be auspicious.''

After Babucuoglu took an oath with the troops and after the signing of the banner register, the ceremony was concluded with a parade.

The paper then gives the history of the 14th Armoured Brigade, which has now been ``honoured'' with this banner: The 14th Cavalry Brigade, from which the 14th Armoured Brigade took its name, was established in Afyon on 31 July 1922. It immediately joined the Great Offensive against the Greeks. It launched an offensive and captured Gediz on 5 September 1922, and on 9 September 1922 it was the first Turkish unit entering Izmir. It went down in history in golden letters for occupying Karsiyaka (quarter of Izmir). With the Turkish Army placed on peace footing on 1 November 1923, it was dispatched to Urfa. KIBRIS goes on and says that it played a role in the suppression of Sheikh Sait and Nasturi Kurdish uprisings in 1925. It was later disbanded. As of 14 May 1997, work started in occupied Kythrea for the formation of an armoured brigade, and on 17 July 1997 the original brigade was reinstated as 14th Armoured Brigade. The Brigade, which is known for having ``thrown the Greeks'' into the sea, is ready to carry out the same task in Cyprus too KIBRIS declares.

[05] Amphorae were unearthed at the ancient city of Arsinoe

According to KIBRIS (19.11.98) during an excavation work for a septic tank, workers found a number of antique implements.

KIBRIS reports that excavations carried out for the last two days by the so- called Department of Museums and Antiquities, until now ten amphorae were unearthed by the workers.

Dating back to 2,300 years the amphorae were unearthed at the ancient ``Arsinoe'' port city.

KIBRIS adds that the excavations will continue.
