The Turkish Cypriot leader concluded his trip to Izmir and returned to occupied CyprusAccording to Ankara Anatolia News Agency (16.2.01) the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash, was awarded an honorary doctorate on Friday by the Nine September University of Izmir for ``his efforts and contributions to the rightful cause of the Turkish Cypriots''.
Denktash, who addressed the ceremony, also gave a speech on the ``Recent Situation in Cyprus''.
In his speech Denktash referred to the historical process in Cyprus, and said they exerted efforts to prevent Cyprus from becoming a repetition of ``Crete Island'' and the realization of Enosis.
Denktash also said that in bilateral meetings, they never made concessions from the position that Turkish Cypriots were not a minority on the island and that there was no progress in the talks so far because the Greek Cypriot side continued its target which started in 1963, and saw the occupation regime and Turkish Republic as an obstacle to their goal. Denktash said efforts were underway to cause problems between Turkey and the occupied areas.
Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriots played their last trump card to defeat Turkish Cypriots and keep Turkey at distance, saying:
``This trump card is the application of the Greek Cypriot side to the EU. The Greek Cypriot side, in case of its membership to the EU, may demand help from the EU in the future claiming that an occupation is in question on the island. So, bringing Turkey and the EU face to face on Cyprus territory may be in question. Greek Cypriots, who are getting prepared for this, are getting armed intensively''.
Speaking to journalists at the Adnan Menderes Airport in Izmir prior to his departure for occupied Cyprus, and in reply to a relevant question, Mr. Denktash repeated his statements to CyBC that he would resign if the pseudostate were to be recognized. Denktash said, ``In an interview, this correspondent insistently told me that I did not want any agreement on the island and that I had been preventing reconciliation. I told him that I wanted an agreement based on the principle of two states on the island. Recognition of our state/s existence is the cornerstone of any agreement and reconciliation on Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots have been in favour of reconciliation. We are ready to sign an agreement recognizing our state/s existence. I may resign after reaching such an agreement.''
