[03] The pseudostate/s so-called Prime Minister has sent a supplementary letter to Turkey on the economic program for the occupied areas

According to BIRLIK newspaper, (20.2.01), the so-called Prime Minister of the pseudostate, Mr. Dervis Eroglu, has sent a supplementary letter to Turkey on the program being worked out in order to overcome the economic difficulties of the occupied areas.

Addressing the delegation, which is headed by the Assistant Deputy Minister of Health of Turkey, Mr. Rustem Zeydan, Eroglu said that the pseudostate has always received support and understanding from Turkey and that as a result of the visit the possibilities of overcoming the pressing health problems will be increased.

[04] The so-called Foreign and Defense under-secretary replies to question by SKY TV in London

According to KIBRIS (20.02.01) the so-called Foreign and Defence Ministry Under Secretary Osman Erdug, replying to questions put to him by SKY TV correspondent, Tom Roche, regarding the Cyprus problem, claimed that ``in case a partnership agreement based on two independent and sovereign states is not reached then the only alternative in Cyprus is for two independent states existing side by side''.

When asked to comment on the proximity talks, Ertug said that the proximity talks were broken up when the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan ``watered down'' the talks with his oral proposals.

He also repeated Denktash/s view that the Cyprus problem must be settled on a confederal basis.

According to KIBRIS (20.2.01) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, commenting on the Cyprus Government/s protest regarding the Turkification of the names of villages and places in the occupied areas alleged that what really is being done is that Hellenized names were being re-Turkified again.

Speaking at the new offices of the so-called Cartography Department, Denktash said that in the past each place carried Greek, Turkish and English names.

He claimed that the Greek Cypriots want to deny the pre-1878 period and turn a blind eye.

He congratulated the so-called Director of the Cartography Office Halil Giray who ``rendered very valuable services which nobody could deny''.

He said that he had used the information supplied by Giray in international conferences, and the other side was unable to give a reply to him.

Denktash urged that similar work be carried out at the so-called Land- Registry and Survey Office.

The ``Director'' of the so-called Cartography Department Halil Giray claimed that prior to 1571 the names of villages and places in the occupied area were either Italian or French with Latin roots. He said that part of these were Hellenized and places where Turks were living, Turkified.
