Sukru Sina Gurel, Turkey`s Minister responsible for Cyprus, said yesterday that Ankara will provide 160 US dollars as financing to the pseudostate for this year, reports KIBRIS (25.09.01).

Talking after the signing of a so - called «Supplementary Protocol» for Economic and Financial Co-operation and a so-called «Mutual Co-operation Agreement» for the Transition Programme towards Economic Stability and Production, Mr Gurel noted that the 20 million dollars will be given to the so -called «Development Bank» and added that «the new arrangements will increase the production and the exports» of the pseudostate.

The Turkish Minister said also that Turkey had never separated the economic and political development of the pseudostate from her economic and political development.

On the behalf of the pseudostate the «agreements» were signed by the so-called «Deputy Prime Minister», Salih Cosar and the «Finance Minister», Mehmet Bayram, who late last night returned to the occupied areas.

[02] The empty shops in occupied Nicosia remind a post - war period

According to KIBRIS (25.09.01), the shops in the old town of occupied Nicosia are getting emptier every day. The paper writes that these empty and deserted shops remind a post - war period.

«Many associations have been created and many projects have been prepared in order to prevent this, but in practice there is still no development», writes KIBRIS concluding that these empty shops are an unpleasant view, a source of bad smell and constitute a danger for those who pass by.

Under the title «The underside of the walls became a rubbish - dump and a toilet», KIBRIS (25.09.01) reports that the ancient walls of occupied Famagusta have been turned into a rubbish - dump and they are used as a toilet.

«The walls, which are one of the most visited places by the tourists, are in a shameful condition and constitute a view which is not suitable for our country», writes KIBRIS.

[04] People live in toilets in occupied Cyprus

According to «Halkin Sesi» (25.09.01), a family of settlers live in a toilet in occupied Nicosia, as they cannot pay the rent of the boarding - house they used to live in.

The paper writes that a month ago Abdullah and Zuleyha Turkal with their two children moved into the «municipal» toilet in which Abdullah works, because they could not pay 90 million Turkish liras per month for renting a boarding - house. It is noted that today one US dollar is sold for about 1,5 million Turkish liras in the pseudostate.

The inhabitants of the region have complained to the so-called «Municipality» of occupied Nicosia about the situation, but they noted that the «officials» were only contented with warning the family.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[07] Columnist of HURRIYET asks for a new formula to the Cyprus problem

Stressing that a new approach to the Cyprus problem is necessary after the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York, the columnist Ferai Tinc, writing at the daily Turkish mainland newspaper HURRIYET (24/9/01), claims that the US Administration's decision to wage a resolute struggle against terrorism will increase the importance of Cyprus. Tinc notes that political stability must be established in eastern Mediterranean to have the Middle East problem solved in a peaceful way. She draws attention to ANAP Deputy Irtemcilik's view on the solution of the disputes between Turkey and Greece and asserts that the Government must take his remarks seriously to draw up a new formula on the Cyprus problem.
