[01] The Turkish Foreign Ministry denies that Turkey will fulfill its obligations towards the new EU member Cyprus

Ankara TRT 2 Television (28.07.04) broadcast the following:

"The Foreign Ministry declared that the allegation that the Turkish ports and airspace will be opened to the Greek Cypriots is a manifestation of the attempts by the Greek Cypriot side to counter the international reactions.

In his weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Namik Tan was reminded about reports originating from the Greek Cypriot sector to the effect that Ankara has begun to allow the Greek Cypriot vessels to berth and to dock -- a right denied since 1974 -- and that the ports and the airspace will be opened to the Greek Cypriots.

"The Greek Cypriot side, which has rejected the Annan plan, puts forward unfeasible proposals from time to time and launches various initiatives with various countries and institutions to counter the criticism and reactions directed against it on the international platform. The report at issue and the matter you have raised, are the manifestations of these same attempts and efforts on their part", Mr Namik Tan said.

Also noting that he has no information about the Greek Cypriot Trade Minister holding contacts in Turkey last week, Tan said that at this stage the most important issue is the lifting of the embargo and isolation faced by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus."

[02] The Turkish side continues its efforts to persuade the world that its occupation of Cyprus is embargo against the Turkish Cypriots.

    Statements by Erodgan in Iran

Under the title "Erdogan asked from Iran to be more sensitive on the Cyprus problem", local KIBRIS newspaper (29.07.04) reports that the Turkish Prime Minister Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a visit to Iran, held a press conference yesterday at the Turkish Embassy in Tehran.

On Cyprus Mr Erdogan said: "In the UN Secretary-General´s report on Cyprus there is a call. The European Council, the EU, the USA and many countries started to respond to this call and we said that they have started to respond positively to this call. From Iran too we asked to exhibit sensitivity on this issue. And we saw that they too are approaching this issue positively. Besides, at the Foreign Ministers´ Meeting of the Islamic Development Organization held in Istanbul, Iran was one of the countries which supported this".

Mainland SABAH newspaper (29.07.04) reports that among the issues discussed between Mr Erdogan and the First Vice-President of Iran, Mr Muhammed Riza Arif was the "TRNC", as it calls they occupied areas of Cyprus.

SABAH cites the following dialogue, which reportedly took place between Mr Erdogan and Mr Arif, under the subtitle: "We expect step on `TRNC´":

Erdogan: "In the report submitted to the UN the injustice of the embargo imposed on the `TRNC´ was stressed. The USA and the EU countries are taking steps to lift this isolation. We expect similar steps from Iran too".

Arif: "On this issue we shall do everything in our hands".

[03] Early election deliberations continue in the occupied area

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (29.07.04), reports that the so-called Council of Ministers of the pseudo state has decided to suggest the 6th of November as the date for early so-called elections in the occupied areas.

Speaking to reporters prior to a meeting of the "council" the so-called Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat said that the only way out is holding early elections. As for the date Talat said that they are yet to reach a consensus on the issue and prior to submitting it to the so-called Assembly, they have to discuss it with the party leaders and get their approval, otherwise , he added, it is no use to insist on it.

On the other hand, the leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement, Mr Mustafa Akinci, called on the "government" to resign and thus pave the way for forming a new "government" that favors settlement of the Cyprus problem. He further said that his Movement is ready for early elections in September or in the December- April period.

Speaking for the Free Thought Movement, Salih Cosar said that the Movement´s two "deputies" will not back an early election motion and they are ready to contribute to the establishment of a new "government"

[04] The Justice and Development Party is left with one vote majority for changes to the constitution

NTV television (28.07.04) broadcast that the number of seats held by the ruling islamic Justice and Development Party (JDP) in the 550-deputy Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) has fallen to 368, just one above the two thirds majority required to amend the constitution.

This came about as a result of the death on Tuesday of JDP deputy Halil Ibrahim Yilmaz, a deputy for the western province of Kutahya, who died at the age of 50 after a heart operation.

[05] The occupation regime´s so-called "National Football Team" played with the National team of Samiland

According to the local daily VATAN newspaper (29.07.04), the so-called "national" football team of Ankara´s regime in occupied Cyprus last night played with the national football team of Samiland.

The match took place in Tromso, Norway and ended with 1-1draw. The pseudo state's team will be returning to the occupied area tomorrow.

Reporting on the issue, KIBRIS newspaper (29.07.04) gives more details on the match and adds that the referee of the match was an UEFA approved referee and he had the badge of UEFA on his chest.
