[02] Kavala (Greece) : International Maritime Forum

More than 140 high level participants from governments and all segments of maritime industry (shipbuilding, shipping, ports, maritime equipment suppliers, marine resources) as well as users of Information technologies and services from Member States of the European Union, Mediterranean See and Black Sea countries will come together in Kavala (Greece) the 21st May 1999 for an International Maritime Forum. The Forum has been formed on the initiative of Martin Bangemann, Member of the European Commission, and Greek Ministers Vasso Papandreou and Evangelos Venizelos in order to promote regional cooperation, not only in the maritime sector, but also in a broader Information Society context. The Forum constitutes a concrete application of the stategy adopted at the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference in Klagenfurt (Austria) the 4 October 1998. Built upon the experience of the European Maritime Industry Forum, which was created in 1991, the Kavala Forum should focus on the specific needs of East Mediterranean region, Black Sea and South Eastern Europe, aiming to enhance the social and economic development of the region. It will provide a platform for the creation of synergies and sharing of experiences through working groups, conferences, and workshops exhibitions. The first Plenary Session is planned to be the starting point of a permanent Maritime Antenna structure in Kavala. The Press conference will take place at 11.15 am at the Technological and Education Institute.

[03] Mario Monti : "New opportunities for insurance"

The consolidation of the Single Market for financial services, assisted by the new Action Plan just presented by the European Commission and by the euro, brings new opportunities and challenges for the insurance sector, Financial Services Commissioner Mario Monti told the Austrian Insurance Association in Vienna, on the occasion of their 100th Anniversary. Mr Monti highlighted in particular the Commission's role in tackling remaining obstacles to the cross-border provision of services, facilitating the growth of new forms of distribution through e-commerce, helping supplementary pensions to benefit from the Single Market and tackling remaining barriers and distortions arising from taxation. Mr Monti also focussed on the new markets opening up in Eastern Europe, but called on the insurance industry to play a full role in promoting sound commercial practices and raising levels of professionalism in these countries. Finally, Mr Monti underlined the opportunities opening up at the global level as a result of the World Trade Organisation agreement on financial services.
