CONTENTS / CONTENU

Midday Express 18/08/2003 TXT: FR ENPDF:DOC:Midday Express 18/08/2003 La Commission européenne déplore la demande de constitution d'un groupe spécial de l'OMC sur les OGM L'Argentine, le Canada et les États-Unis ont demandé aujourd'hui la création d'un groupe spécial de l'OMC concernant l'approche adoptée par l'Union européenne à l'égard des organismes génétiquement modifiés (OGM) Statement by President Prodi following the killing of children in Kosovo I am dismayed to hear of the brutal attack on a group of children swimming in a river near Gorazdevac that cost the life of two young Kosovo Serbs. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. Let me take this occasion to send our deepest sympathy to them. The European Commission will continue its efforts, together with the people of Kosovo, to help them to definitely leave behind the legacy of the recent tragic past. Let this terrible tragedy not lead to a slowdown in the ongoing process of creating a peaceful and secure environment for all people of Kosovo. Further support measures for farmers hit by drought Three new measures to support farmers affected by the drought have been proposed today. The payment of 50% of direct support for arable crops has been advanced from 16 November to 16 October. Some quantities of rye, barley and sorghum will be offered for sale by tender from intervention stocks to be used in animal feed. The advances for suckler cow and special beef premiums and sheep and goat premiums will be brought forward from 16 October to the beginning of September in the most affected areas. The three measures have been voted in the Cereals and Joint Beef/Sheep/Goats Management Committees today and still have to be adopted formally by the Commission in the next few days. Commission's Joint Research Centre forecasts this year's crop losses caused by drought The Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) uses its advanced crop yield forecasting system to predict the effects of the persisting drought on this year's harvest in the European Union. The expected drop in the main crop yields ranges from about 2% for potato to 25% for sunflower at EU level. The loss in wheat production will be approximately 10 million tonnes compared to the previous agricultural campaign. The quantitative forecasts produced by the JRC on a regular basis in support of the Common Agricultural Policy cover the main crops, such as wheat, grain maize, rape seed, sunflower, sugar beet and potato.
