[01] Hurricane Ivan : Commission earmarks €1.5 million for victims in
Grenada
The European Commission, through its Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), has
earmarked €1.5 million for humanitarian aid to meet emergency needs
caused by Hurricane Ivan on the Caribbean island of Grenada. The focus of
the aid will be on providing the most vulnerable people with emergency
shelter, as well as food, drinking water, hygiene kits and tarpaulins for
house roofing. About 5000 homeless families will be targeted. Other
interventions could include support for rehabilitating water supplies and
sanitation. Extensive house destruction has forced thousands of people to
go to organised shelters, and many others who are homeless are in
"informal" shelters. The aid will be implemented through ECHO partners
working in the region.
[02] La Commission lance une consultation des intéressés sur la politique
future en matière de changement climatique
Quelle devrait être la démarche de l'UE concernant la lutte contre le
changement climatique dans l'avenir ? Comment les pays de l'UE devraient-
ils coopérer pour lutter contre le changement climatique après 2012,
lorsque les actuels objectifs du protocole de Kyoto arriveront à leur terme
? Ces questions figurent dans une consultation en ligne des intéressés
lancée aujourd'hui par la Commission européenne. La consultation donne
aux intéressés (citoyens, entreprises, décideurs politiques, ONG,
autorités, scientifiques et autres) l’occasion de participer au débat
sur l’avenir de la politique en matière de climat à l'échelle mondiale.
La Commission utilisera les contributions pour élaborer la politique
future de l'UE en matière de changement climatique et sa propre
contribution au débat international sur le futur régime international de
lutte contre le changement climatique.
[03] Feu vert de la Commission pour l'acquisition des activités de Shell
au Portugal par Repsol
En application du règlement sur les concentrations, la Commission
européenne a marqué son accord pour l'acquisition des activités
pétrolières de Shell au Portugal par la compagnie pétrolière espagnole
Repsol YPF. Cette transaction ne suscite pas d'inquiétudes en matière de
concurrence dans la mesure où d'autres grandes entreprises sont présentes
sur ce marché.
[04] Commission clears acquisition of Polish slaughterhouse Sokołów by
Danish Crown and Finnish HK Ruokatalo
The European Commission has granted regulatory approval to the acquisition
of joint control by slaughterhouses Danish Crown and Finnish HK Ruokatalo
of the Polish slaughterhouse Sokołów. The operation does not raise any
competition concerns given that the companies are presently active in
essentially different countries.
[05] Commission clears Uniqa acquisition of Italian insurer Claris Vita
The European Commission has granted clearance, under the Merger Regulation,
to a proposed concentration by which Austrian insurer Uniqa Versicherung AG
acquires sole control of Italy's Claris Vita S.p.A by way of purchases of
shares. Claris Vita is an insurance company which operates exclusively in
Italy in the life insurance market whereas Uniqa operates mainly in
Austria. (The operation, which was notified on 16 August, was examined
under a simplified procedure).
[06] Second quarter 2004 compared to first quarter 2004 : production in the
construction sector down by 0.9% in the euro-zone ; down by 0.8% in EU25
Seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.9% in
the euro-zone and by 0.8% in the EU25 in the second quarter of 2004,
compared to the first quarter of 2004, Eurostat estimates today. In the
first quarter of 2004, production decreased by 0.2% in the euro-zone, but
rose by 0.3% in the EU25. As compared to the second quarter of 2003, output
in the second quarter of 2004 fell by 1.2% in the euro-zone, but rose by
0.2% in the EU25, after +1.0% and +3.5% respectively in the first quarter
of 2004.
