[II] Other news - Autres nouvelles

[02] Commission refers Shell and Cepsa aircraft refuelling joint venture to Spanish competition authorities

The European Commission has decided to refer to the Spanish competition authorities the competence to assess the impact of the creation of SIS, a joint venture between Shell Espana and Cepsa for the provision of aircraft refuelling services at Spanish airports. The Spanish authorities have requested the referral of the case. As the creation of SIS has no impact outside Spain, the Commission has considered that the Spanish competition authorities are best placed to assess the competitive impact of the operation.

[03] Margot Wallström and Mariann Fischer Boel to participate in European Environment Agency anniversary events

The European Environment Agency, EEA, celebrates its 10th anniversary today and tomorrow. Margot Wallström, Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy, and Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel will take part in the celebrations. The Copenhagen-based Agency exists to provide objective, reliable and comparable information about the environment for policy-makers and the public. Commissioner Wallström, who was Commissioner for Environment in the last Commission, will attend a dinner tonight hosted by the EEA for around 300 guests who have worked with the Agency or are prominent in addressing environmental issues elsewhere in the world. Tomorrow, Thursday, Mariann Fischer Boel will speak at a high- level EEA conference on the theme of "environmental awareness and public participation". Margot Wallström said : "A large majority of citizens want the EU to be active in protecting their environment. To do that effectively, European policy-makers need good information of the kind the EEA produces. The Agency's reports and briefings are also important in helping to raise public awareness about the environment, which is essential if people are to protect it in their everyday lives." Mariann Fischer Boel said : "The EEA's information is a very useful asset that will help us track progress as we continue to make the Common Agricultural Policy compatible with a clean and healthy environment." Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas sent the following message to the EEA : "I congratulate the EEA and regret that I cannot be there to take part in the celebrations. The European Environment Agency provides important support to the Commission, among others, through its reliable and timely information. In tackling climate change, the loss of biological diversity and the many other environmental challenges facing us, I look forward to working closely with the Agency."
