Voting began at 7:00 a.m. Sunday throughout Greece in general, as nearly 10 million registered voters started heading to polling stations to vote for a new government and a new 300-member parliament in strongly contested general elections, following a brief but heated month of campaigning.

There are 9,824,223 registered voters in Greece, marking an increase of 29,629 voters over 2004 and 848,088 voters over 2000. Of those, 4,746,516 are men and 5,077,707 are women. The number of new voters (aged 18-21, registered between 2004 and June 30 this year) is 490,015.

[02] PM: Elections a celebration of democracy

Prime minister and ruling New Democracy (ND) party leader Costas Karamanlis described Sunday as a "celebration of democracy", as nearly 10 million Greeks headed to the polls nationwide in general elections.

"Today, the people speak," Karamanlis told reporters after casting his vote at the 431st polling station in Aghios Eleftherios, Thessaloniki

"The Greek men and women, with their vote, are choosing the course that our country will follow in the coming years," he said, adding that "we respect and have confidence in all the citizens, and we are participating in this great celebration of democracy, as befits such a celebration, with a smile and optimism.

Karamanlis flew to Thessaloniki early Sunday morning, where he was greeted by Thessaloniki prefect Panayotis Psomiadis, mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, and ND local candidates and officials.

The premier returned to Athens immediately after voting.
