  • [01] PM: Elections a celebration of democracy

Prime minister and ruling New Democracy (ND) party leader Costas Karamanlis described Sunday as a "celebration of democracy", as nearly 10 million Greeks headed to the polls nationwide in general elections.

"Today, the people speak," Karamanlis told reporters after casting his vote at the 431st polling station in Aghios Eleftherios, Thessaloniki

"The Greek men and women, with their vote, are choosing the course that our country will follow in the coming years," he said, adding that "we respect and have confidence in all the citizens, and we are participating in this great celebration of democracy, as befits such a celebration, with a smile and optimism.

Karamanlis flew to Thessaloniki early Sunday morning, where he was greeted by Thessaloniki prefect Panayotis Psomiadis, mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, and ND local candidates and officials.

The premier returned to Athens immediately after voting.

[02] PASOK leader: New day dawns for Greece

Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou said Sunday that "a new day is dawning for Greece", adding that "all together, we are turning the page", in statements after voting at the 151st polling station in downtown Thessaloniki.

"A new day is dawning for Greece. All together, we are turning the page and bringing back to the Greek men and women dignity and a smile on their faces. It is a day of optimism for Greece," Papandreou said.

Papandreou was greeted on arrival at the polling station by candidate MPs of his party, PASOK members and friends.

The PASOK leader departed for Athens immediately after voting.

[03] KKE leader: Commitment to the people

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) leader Aleka Papariga said Sunday that her party committed itself to the people, but also to those "bold" voters who voted her party for the first time in Sunday's elections, adding that "they know where they will find us, at the side of the working people at their places of work". She was speaking after casting her vote in Peristeri.

Papariga said that her party could be found everywhere "except one place, there where there is political cookery".

[04] SYRIZA leader optimistic on elections outcome

Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader Alekos Alavanos cast his vote Sunday at the 30th polling station in Iraklion, Crete.

"I welcome the 'troublemakers' to the electoral process, the youths of the 400 euro, the Internet, and Article 16. I believe that, from Iraklion to Serres, from south to north, the citizens, with their vote, will give birth to something new," Alavanos said to reporters after casting his vote.

"SYRIZA's goal, of a change of the (political) landscape, will begin being materialised as of tonight," he added.

Replying to press questions, Alavanos said he was certain that SYRIZA will elect a parliamentary deputy in the Iraklion prefecture, one of the two voting districts in which the party leader chose to be a candidate in.
