[02] Alavanos on social security issue

The social security issue, the question of surveillance cameras in streets, the state budget, with emphasis on funds for education, and secondly relations between the state and the Church will be the main issues preoccupying the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) at this time.

This was stated in an address made by its leader Alekos Alavanos at the meeting of the Central Political Committee of the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) on Wednesday.

Referring to the social security issue, Alavanos said that an effort is being made on the part of the government to remove consolidated rights and funds and added that the government is "trying to divide society."

Alavanos further said that a stage of intense developments on the political scene is being experienced and spoke of a "triple blow against the new generation," namely: the worsening of labour and social security conditions, the operation of surveillance cameras and expenditures earmarked in the budget for education and whose total does not amount to 3 percent.

[03] FM invited to Annapolis con'f on Mideast

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis has been invited by her US counterpart Condoleezza Rice to attend an international conference on the Middle East, to be convened in Annapolis, Maryland, the foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.

The development marks the first time Greece has been invited to a similar conference for the specific region, with the event set for Nov. 26 and 27.

In commenting on the development, Foreign Ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos said the Greek government hopes the Annapolis conference will open the way for a lasting and viable solution in the region with the creation of two states ?that will live side-by-side in peace and security?.

Regarding the Greek stance on the Middle East, Koumoutsakos said "Greece does not fail to undertake every possible effort, both internationally and within the framework of the European Union, for there to be a substantial promotion of the peace effort, contributing in the consolidation of peace and stability in the Middle East."

He added that "the Annapolis conference, we hope, will open the road for a lasting viable solution with the creation of two states which will live next to each other in peace and security," adding that "Greece feels vindicated in its efforts for dialogue and for a peaceful co-existance and cooperation."
