  • [01] SYRIZA: Gov't prey to our lenders

AMNA--Main opposition SYRIZA on Friday, in an announcement, said that despite Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' personal pledge that there will be no more measures, the plans for the continuation of the special real estate surtax collected via PPC electricity bills, once again indicate the total political unreliability of the government, which is prey to our lenders. Finally, the special real estate surtax, the abolition of which was presented to be a red line between the government and the troika, was Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras' recommendation.amna

The taking of new measures via the infamous 'exclusion clauses' is the next step for a government which is hostage to a programme that has failed in all its targets and has left behind a devastated society and economy. The problem for the government is not the 500,000 household without any income or the 1.5 million jobless or the closure of hundreds of thousands of shops, but how it will implement to the end a programme of disaster and devastation.

[02] Gov't acknowledges poor results in effort to collect overdue debt from wealthy taxpayers

AMNA--The Greek government on Friday acknowledged poor results in an effort to collect overdue tax debt from wealthy taxpayers.

Finance Deputy Minister George Mavraganis, in a report tabled to Parliament, answering to a question by independent deputy Odysseas Voudouris, said: "It is a fact that the results of a special tax collection squad in the period from May 1, 2012 to August 31, 2012, focused on 459 cases with large overdue tax debt, which resulted to a very low rate of tax collection". amna

The minister cited technical reasons for the poor results, such as the fact that 170 out of the 459 cases were bankrupt companies, 47 pct of the tax debt referred to third parties and lack of any property belonging to the debtors. Mavraganis said that finance ministry agencies were continuing their effort to raise overdue tax debt.
