  • [01] Banking reform 'necessary and urgent', Venizelos tells EU Parliament

ANA-MPA -- Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos on Tuesday said it was "necessary and urgent" to promote measures for banking reform in Europe, while speaking before the European Parliament on behalf of Greek presidency of the European Council.

Participating in the discussion on a report submitted by Portuguese MEP Elisa Ferreira on the banking union, Venizelos noted that one of the lessons learned from the crisis was linked to the importance of a banking union as a "fundamental pillar of economic governance".

The overall "uniform handling of the systemic banks" and a "uniform approach to protecting deposits" alongside the single supervisory mechanism are outstanding issues that must urgently be resolved, Venizelos said, during the current Parliamentary session if possible.

Recognising that there were certain "institutional issues" that must be resolved (such as the barriers raised by Constitutional courts in certain member-states concerning the allocation of resources), Venizelos underlined that "the market and society await the establishment of a Single Resolution Mechanism and the Single Bank Resolution Fund" and a compromise is feasible, avoiding clashes with national Constitutional sensitivities.

[02] Former TT chairman Filippidis in Athens

ANA-MPA/ Former Hellenic Postbank (TT) chairman and CEO Angelos Filippidis who arrived at 9.05 to the Athens International Airport with a Turkish Airlines flight was received by police officers and was conducted to the police headquarters in Athens. Later in the day Filippidis will be sent to the prosecutor.

Filippidis' extradiction to Greece was achieved following Greek Foreign Ministry's agreement with the Turkish authorities.

The senior banker is wanted in Greece for charges relating to a series of unsecured loans given by Hellenic Postbank when he was at its helm. The Greek authorities' request is based on a second arrest warrant issued against Filippidis in connection with the same case.

Filippidis had been arrested by Turkish authorities on January 11 in Istanbul based on an international warrant for his arrest issued by Greece for the Hellenic Postbank case.

Greek authorities on Monday sent another request to the Turkish extraditions' prosecutor, asking that fugitive former Hellenic Postbank (TT) chairman and CEO Angelos Filippidis remain in jail. The request was made in the wake of a Turkish court's decision for Filippidis' release.
