  • [01] SYRIZA's Kouroumblis expresses grief over plight of Palestinians

ANA-MPA -- Main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) Parliamentary representative Panayiotis Kouroumblis, in a statement on Sunday on the situation in the Middle East, expressed his grief over the drama of the Palestinian people, while also condemning forces placing obstacles for a solution to the problem.

Kouroumblis added that for 66 years the Palestinian people have been experiencing the martyrdom of expatriation and displacement.

He also stressed that the continution of this inhuman occupation does not produce woes for the Palestinian people only but in the longterm for the Israeli people as well.

[02] Protests over Sunday shop opening in Athens, Thessaloniki

ANA-MPA -- A rally held by the Private Employees Federation, against the opening of stores on Sundays, was concluded at a downtown Athens location on Sunday afternoon.

Demonstrators held protests in front of seven big stores that remained open. They blocked entrances with banners and shouted slogans for the stores to close. Most stores in the region, however, remained closed. Similar protests were also held in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki.

According to the Federation's president, Sunday's strike was successful by at least 95 percent.

Protestors were objecting to a recent government measure allowing shops in the centre of Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as in a handful of other mainly tourist destinations in Greece, to remain open on Sundays on a pilot basis. The results of the measure will be evaluated and, if judged successful, it will be extended to all areas of the country.

Opposition to the measure was also expressed by main opposition SYRIZA, which demanded that the government withdraw the measures, and by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE).

[03] Last day for filing income tax returns looms

ANA-MPA -- The deadline for submitting income tax returns expires on Monday. A total of 5,450,000 statements had been submitted by Saturday, out of a total of about 5,700,000.

According to Finance ministry estimates, another 100,000 tax statements will be submitted on Sunday through the TAXIS net.

The ministry has repeatedly stressed that the first installments of any income tax due will start at the end of July, despite the extension of the deadlines by two weeks to July 14.
