[01] PM Samaras meets with NATO secretary general Stoltenberg
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Thursday met with NATO secretary
general Jens Stoltenberg.
The two officials discussed all the open issues that threaten security
in the wider region as well as issues related to Ukraine.
Samaras in his statements noted that Greece despite its fiscal
difficulties is one of the four NATO members that spend more than 2
percent of their GDP on defence. He also said that Greece was exiting
the crisis and now was an islet of security in the region.
Referring to the crisis in Syria and Iraq and the terrorist activities
of the jihadists, Samaras pointed out this challenge cannot be handled
only with military means and that the mechanisms of partnership and the
Mediterranean dialogue should be used for this purpose.
Stoltenberg, on his part, noted that Greece has been a solid ally for 60
years adding that he was impressed with the military exercise "Pyrpolitis"
which he attended earlier in the day.
