[01] DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ATHENS STOCK EXCHANGE
On the Athens Stock Exchange, the general price index marked a sharp
fall of 4% yesterday, closing at 5,283.42 points. The Bank of Greece
yesterday decided to take measures to support the stock exchange and
facilitate citizens who have bought shares without coverage.
Specifically, the Bank of Greece has decided to increase the limit of
loans from 5 million to 15 million drachmas so that citizens may buy
shares and easy access to loans for stockbrocking agencies.
In the meantime, officials believe that the situation in the Athens
stock exchange will soon return to normal. Yesterday however, there was
an upward trend in several stock exchanges in Europe. In the yearly
conference of the International Monetary Fund in Washington, the Greek
national economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou referred to the Greek
economy's positive course in view of Greece's entry in the European
Monetary Union.
[02] URGENT MEETING ON IMMINENT EARTHQUAKE
Following the recent rumours about an imminent earthquake, the chairman
of the Committee of Seismic Danger Dimitris Papanikolaou has appeared
reassuring over the issue. After an urgent meeting of the committee
yesterday with the participation of the representative of the VAN Group
Kostas Eftaxias, Mr Papanikolaou gave assurances that the post-quake
activity was normal and that no new data by the VAN Group had reached
the committee. Meanwhile, the environment minister Kostas Laliotis has
called on scientists or researchers who have data on an imminent
earthquake to submit them to the Committee of Seismic Danger, or
release them.
[03] AGRICULTURE MINISTERS MEETING IN BRUSSELS
Agriculture minister Giorgos Anomeritis is participating in the hard
negotiations currently taking place at the Agriculture ministers
meeting in Brussels. The talks of the meeting aim at the adoption of a
common stand on behalf of the 15 European member countries at the
negotiations at the World Commerce organisation which will begin in
Seattle, in the United States on November 30th.
[04] NO MEETING BETWEEN SIMITIS, ECEVIT AND CLINTON
The Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas has stated that a
meeting between the Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis, his Turkish
counterpart Bulent Ecevit and the American president Bill Clinton is
not scheduled to take place at the meeting of the Organization for
Security and Cooperation in Europe.
[05] PATRIARCH DIODOROS VISITS ATHENS
Patriarch Diodoros of Jerusalem will pay an official visit to Athens
from September 30th to October 3rd. During his visit to Athens, which
is taking place at the government's invitation, Patriarch Diodoros will
meet with the political leadership of the country, Archbishop
Hristodoulos of Athens and all Greece and members of the Holy Synod.
[06] POST-QUAKE DEVELOPMENTS IN GREECE
During his visit to the municipalities of Kamatero and Agii Anargyri
yesterday noon, the prime minister Costas Simitis reiterated that the
procedure for housing the homeless in prefabricated houses would be
speedy and urged for assistance to the government's efforts towards
this end.
Meanwhile, an extra relief allowance is being paid to earthquake
stricken pensioners of the public sector. New Democracy party leader
Kostas Karamanlis and the Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos visited
the settlement of the Greek Moslems in the suburb of Gazi yesterday.
Meanwhile, schools in Piraeus that had suffered damages by the recent
earthquake opened yesterday, while it is believed that classes will
start next week in schools under repair in Attica.
[07] INVESTIGATIONS ON THE RECENT AIR ACCIDENT OVER BUCHAREST
Three members of the Greek committee investigating the recent aviation
tragedy of the prime minister's Falcon during which 7 people lost their
lives, flew to Bucharest yesterday. In the meantime, the New Democracy
party has tabled a proposal in parliament for the setting up of a
parliamentary investigating committee to examine the circumstances
under which the tragedy occurred.
[08] NEW OA LINE ATHENS - SKOPJE
Transport minister Tasos Mantelis will inaugurate this afternoon the
Athens - Skopje new line of Olympic Airways. The flights will be taking
place every Tuesday and Saturday starting on October 31st, three times
a week with ATR-72 type aircraft.
[09] THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BBC GREEK SERVICE
The Greek Service of the BBC, which began its first broadcasts in
shortwave in 1939, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a number of
events and new programmes.
