    [01] Weather forecast

    Mainly sunny weather is forecast for today, with scattered cloud on the mainland from early evening, turning to showers or storms in the north. Winds north-northwesterly, light to moderate.

    Sunny in Athens, with temperatures between 23C and 35C. Same in Thessaloniki, followed by showers and storms. Temperatures from 21C to 29C

    [02] Archibishop Hristodoulos met with President Stefanopoulos.

    A highly anticipated meeting between President Kostis Stephanopoulos and Archbishop Christodoulos over the latters request for a referendum on the contentious ID issue, lasted for 45 minutes on Wednesday. A written statement issued by the Presidency immediately afterwards stresses that the preconditions envisioned by the countrys constitution and state laws to hold such a referendum do not exist and all have the obligation to adhere to the rules of law, while the collection of signatures outside the margins of the stated legal procedure cannot possibly reverse the Constitutions provisions.

    Commenting on the issue , the ND party honorary President , Konstantinos Mitsotakis spoke of a deep constitutional irregularity related to the issue of the ID cards and called the government to bring the issue to the parliament after having held a dialogue with the Church.

    The competent Holy Synod will today meet with the President of the Greek parliament , Apostolos Kaklamanis and the President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress party , Nikos Konstantopoulos.

    [03] Pasok party Executive Committee

    The Pasok party Executive Committee had a 5-hour meeting yesterday during which final decisions on the partys political positions were taken while talks on the partys constitutional amendments were put off to be held at the organisational conference in 2002 . The text will be submitted to the partys Central Committee which meets tomorrow. Prime-minister Simitis stressed that his party will continue working with consistency as it is a force of change for the Greek society.

    [04] Euro currency

    Greeces is entering into the final stage for the establishment of the unified European currency euro with banks being supplied with euro coins as of September 1st. National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou has issued a strict warning to all sectors of the market to avert speculation incidents in the conversion the dracma- euro conversion.

    [05] Inviolability of international borders of high interest to Greece.

    Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos told a Parliament committee on Wednesday that Athens considers the inviolability of international borders in the region a matter of high national interest. Speaking before Parliaments national defence and foreign affairs committee, Tsohatzopoulos briefed its members over Greeces participation in a NATO force dispatched to the strife-torn Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Operation Essential Harvest -- to collect and destroy weapons and ammunition surrendered by ethnic Albanian rebels in that country. Asked about the number of weapons NATO expects to collect, the Greek defence minister replied that the important point has to do with the rebels commitment to surrender them. The NATO force will collect those (weapons) handed over voluntarily, and wont enter into a procedure of searching out weapons,

    [06] Cyprus President meets UN Sec Gen special envoy

    Cyprus President , Glafkos Klerides will have a new meeting today with the UN Secretary General special envoy , Alvaro the Soto. Mr. De Soto is expected to meet with the Turkish Cypriot leader Raulf Dektash tomorrow.

    [07] Athens stock market

    On the Athens stock market yesterday, the general share index went down by 0.98 percent to close at 2,778.47 points .Turnover was 12.5 million euro.

    [08] NATO satisfied at alliances first phase of the mission in FYROM ''Essential Harvest''.

    NATO Secretary General George Robertson expreseed satisfaction at the first phase of the alliances mission in Fyrom as the Operation Essential Harvest had got close to hitting its target for the first three days of collecting one third of a total of 3300 National Liberation Army weapons. The first German soldiers to participate in the NATO force to collect weapons from Albanian rebells arrived late last night in FYROM , a few hours after the German parliament approved the dispatch of German forces to FYROM.
