    [01] PASOK Central committee to aproove the party s positions

    The PASOK party Central Committee will have to approve now the text regarding the party s positions prepared by the Executive Bureau. The meeting of the Committee is to commence today and end tomorrow. The Prime Minister Costas Simitis, whose statements are expected with great interest, will refer to government s goals namely economic development, the creation of a social state, the boosting of Greece s international position and the government s plans for the next four years.

    In the meantime, during the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the measures regarding social policy will be finalized and will be anounced at the Thessaloniki Trade Fair by the Prime Minister. On the second half of September the ministerial committee will approve the 2002 budget, which will be discussed by the competent Parliamentary committee on October 1.

    [02] Identity cards issue still within the Church s interests

    A Holy Synod s committee is to have separate meetings today with PASOK s Secretary Costas Scandalides, the Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga, the President of the Democratic Social Movement Dimitris Tsovolas and Political Spring party leader Antonis Samaras to discuss the issue of the identity cards. Meanwhile, one day after the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos refusal to satisfy the Church s demand for a referrendum regarding the identity cards issue, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos stated that the Church was getting more and more infected with the continuing attacks against it by some.

    From his side, the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis described the President s statements regarding the identity cards as wise and clear, while New Democracy Honorary President Constantinos Mitsotakis accused Mr. Stephanopoulos of creating tension. Finally, former Prime Prime minister Yeorgios Rallis congratulated Mr. Stephanopoulos on his stance, while composer Mikis Theodorakis critisized the Archbishop.

    [03] Increases in private education fees should not exceed 3,5% says deputy minister

    Deputy Development minister Milena Apostolaki reiterated that increases in the fees of private schools and kindergardens as well as institutes will not have to exceed 3,5%.

    [04] Voting booklets to be replaced by 13-digit personal voting number

    Voting booklets will be replaced with a 13-digit voting personal number, which will be used by voters in the next municipal and prefectural elections.

    [05] 55 Archaeological sites to remain open on Sunday evening

    55 Archaeological sites and museums all over Greece will remain open on Sunday evening for those who will wish to enjoy September s full moon. Events and theatrical performances will take place in the sites, while entrance will be free.
