Light cloud in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 15C to 24C.(30/5/2002 12:09:00 μμ) [02] Debate on economy at ParliamentA Cabinet meeting is being held at this time of hour under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Costas Simitis on the implementation course of the Third Community Support Framework.Meanwhile, during a debate between Mr Simitis and main opposition New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis on the economy at Parliament yesterday, the Prime Minister accused the New Democracy party of trying to expose Greece by creating a false image of a prevailing crisis. Mr Simitis described the development that had taken place recently as unprecedented, in contrast to the frozen development rates between 1990-1993 and the ups and downs between 1974-1981. Referring to the issue of the restoration of democracy, the Prime Minister stressed that PASOK established popular dominance permanently and changed Greece’s image. From his side, Mr Karamanlis accused the government of managerial insufficiency, pointing out that more than 500 billion drachmas were in danger of being lost due to inability of absorption of community funds. Greek Communist party Secretary General Aleka Papariga described the two leaders’ speeches as electoral, while Synaspismos party President Nikos Kostantopoulos accused them of trying to create a climate of polarization. (30/5/2002 12:59:00 μμ) [03] Reppas-Polyzogopoulos meeting on Social Security issueLabour Minister Dimitris Reppas is to meet with the President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers Christos Polyzogopoulos at 14:00 today to discuss about the future of the social security reform. Replying to the criticism of the President of the Greek Industrialists Association, Mr Polyzogopoulos said that if no state funding takes place and tax-evasion is pursued, the employers’ contributions should be increased. Finally, he referred to enterprises that do not pay their contributions to Funds.The government proposals regarding the financing of Funds will be assessed at a plenary session meeting of the General Confederation of Greek Workers, due to be held tomorrow. (30/5/2002 1:02:00 μμ) [04] E.U. measures on illegal migration are poor says PapayiannakisPrime Minister Costas Simitis will send a letter to his Spanish counterpart, expressing his concern over the measures against illegal migration.Commenting on relevant publications, Commission officials stated that finger prints will not be re-introduced on European Union identity cards The governments of the 15 European Union member-states are dealing with the issue of illegal migration and the joint European Union policy on political asylum in a fragmentary way. This is inferred by the answer of the Spanish Minister on European issues De Miguel given to Synaspismos party Eurodeputy M. Papayiannakis’ question regarding the measures the E.U intends to take in order to control in an effective way illegal migration. Mr Miguel had to admit the vast legislative gap existing due to the different kinds of legislation of the EU member-states and the lack of a joint European policy on the issue. Additionally, the proposal for the setting up of a border guard that will be discussed at an informal meeting by the EU Ministers of Interior, Public Order and Justice meets with the negative to hostile stance of the Scandinavian countries. According to Mr Papayiannakis, it is evident from Mr Miguel’s answer that the 15 EU governments have no specific plan or programme regarding measures to be taken against third countries that are tolerating or even harbouring illegal migration, so as not to disturb their bilateral relations with countries such as Syria, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco and Albania.
