    Sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country. Winds north-northwesterly, moderate, turning strong at sea. On the northern mainland, temperatures will range from 13C to 26C; on the rest of the mainland from 15C to 29C; and in the islands from 18C to 25C. Sunny in Athens, with temperatures between 18C and 29C. Scattered cloud in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 17C to 26C.

    [02] Greece adopts EU anti-smoke measures

    According to his statements with the New Hellenic Television (NET) today, Health Minister Nasiokas said that the antismoke measures taken by the government are the mildest taken by any other European Union country.

    Mr Nasiokas said that the target of the antismoke campaign is triple. It aims at stopping its spread to the youth and women, help smokers from stop smoking and protect non-smokers from inhaling smoke. Smoking will be banned in all indoor public spaces, the mass media and taxis, while as of October, restaurants and cafes will be required to have special non-smoke sections.

    Besides, as of 2003 open air advertisements related to tobacco products will be banned.

    Moreover, the minister said that those breaking the law will have to pay fines.

    Meanwhile, on the occasion of the world day against smoking Archbishop Christodoulos will address a message against smoking.

    [03] Social Security Issue

    The plenary session of the General Confederation of Greek Workers is to decide today on its stance on the final proposals of the Ministry of Labour on the Social Security issue.

    Among the improvements proposed by the minister is that the amount of a pension to be calculated on the basis of the five last working years.

    Meanwhile, the dialogue on the reform of the Social Security System that took place between the Minister of Labour Dimitris Reppas and the Presidency of the General Confederation of Greek Workers ended yesterday. Both Mr Reppas and Christos Polyzogopoulos expressed their satisfaction over the results of the dialogue. The bill will be tabled at Parliament in June.

    Finally, the Presidency of the General Confederation of Greek Workers will meet with the Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga at 13:30 today.

    [04] Simitis asks for better absorption of funds

    During a Cabinet meeting held yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis asked for an of the absorption rate of funds deriving from the Third Community Support Framework, although he described the course of its absorption as dynamic. He pointed out that up to now 65% of its total budget has been declared.

    To cover the needs of the Third Community Support Framework, the government decided that 3,500 employees be hired at ministries, Municipalities and Prefectures this year.

    [05] Turkey provokes

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis will meet with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence today to discuss the course of national issues at 13:00 today.

    In the meantime, Nicosia has protested to international organisations, while Athens reacted intensely to Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash&#8217;s decision to expand the territorial waters of the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus to 12 nautical miles.

    Moreover, another Turkish provocative act has been revealed today. Last Sunday, four Turkish F-16s that were heading to Spain were refueled in air south of Crete and were intercepted by Greek planes. NATO was briefed in the provocation.

    Finally, within the framework of the fourth round of face to face talks, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Clerides will meet with Mr Denkash in the presence of Secretary General of the Cyrpus issue Alvaro De Soto today.

    [06] The EU adopts measures against illegal migration

    In Rome, the 15 European Union Ministers of Interior and Public Order agreed for the setting up of new group of guards that will be guarding its borders from illegal migration.

    In a letter sent to the Mr Hose Maria Athnar, who is presiding presently at the European Union, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stresses that attention is needed so as to prevent any tension with a part of the society coming from third countries.
