Temperatures in Athens will range between 7C to 12C and in Thessaloniki from 5C to 8C(16/12/2002 10:40:00 ðì) [02] Overwhelming approval of Simitis handling of Cyprus issueA climate of euphoria prevails in Athens and Nicosia, following the decision taken at the EU summit in Copenhagen to admit Cyprus to the block without preconditions. Athens and Nicosia are now planning the next steps for the resolution of the Cyprus political problem.Prime-minister Simitis will today brief the President of the Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos on the outcome of the EU summit in Copenhagen while the same issue will be the focus of tomorrow s inner cabinet meeting and a debate in parliament at party leaders level. In an interview with state radio NET, Press Minister, Hristos Protopappas maintained that the Greek and Cypriot sides should adhere to the strategy followed at the EU summit in Copenhagen in procedures for the resolution of Cyprus political program to the benefit not only of Cyprus and Greece but to Turkey as well. An opinion poll conducted by KAPPA RESEARCH in Athens, Nicosia, Constantinopolis, London and the occupied sector of Cyprus indicated overwhelming approval for Prime-minister Simitis handling of the issue. Also , indicated that Cyprus President Klerides was justified by the policy he followed. In contrast, the majority of respondents were critical of the stance adopted by Turkish-Cypriot leader, Raulf Dektash. Raulf Dektash has been strongly criticised for his intransigent stance while the opposition Turkish-Cypriot Republican party and various organisations have called for his resignation. The Turkish press speaks of an end of Dektash political carrier. (16/12/2002 10:41:00 ðì) [03] Coalition President visits TurkeyThe President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos is on a two- day visit to Turkey.In a warm welcome at the Neohorio town in Vosporus, Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos hailed his support and initiatives for Greek-Turkish friendship, international peace and Turkey s European orientation. In his address, the Coalition President underlined that Patriarch Vartholomeos was a historic figure for his initiatives for inter religious dialogue , social justice as well as Greek-Turkish friendship and cooperation . (16/12/2002 10:42:00 ðì) [04] Bakoyianni attacker interrogated todayGiorgos Sandalis, 35 year old, will be today interrogated for Friday s attack on newly elected Athens mayor, Dora Bakoyianni. Sandalis who has a history of mental problems , was charged with attempted murder and ilegal possesion and use of weapons.Bakoyianni escaped the attack uninjured, while the condition of her driver who was shot in the neck has improved significantly. On Sunday, December 22, all stores will be open from 10am to 6pm.Meanwhile Development Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos expressed confidence that the inflation rate will drop this month compared to November. Tsohatzopoulos who visited the Thessaloniki market yesterday said it was a period of normalisation in relation to food prices for the Christams dinner.
