    A cloudy and rainy day is forecast with showers in the south and snowfall on high ground. Winds variable, light to moderate, turning locally strong in the Aegean.Temperatures in Athens will range between 8C and 12C and in Thessaloniki from 5C to 7C.

    During a debate on the new taxation draft-bill in the parliament yesterday, Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis announced further tax cuts for large families having more than three children, increasing by 1.000 euro for each child the 20.000 euro tax free income.

    In his meeting with Prime-minister Simitis, Mr. Hristodoulakis said the Greek economy had withstood world economic uncertainty and recession, maintaining a high growth rate. He added that in 2003, top priority will be given to reducing inflation.

    On Wednesday, debate will begin in parliament on the new state budget which opposition ND, leader, Kostas Karamanlis dismissed as just one more link in the chain of false budgets of the past few years. The Finance Minister responded by charging ND with regularly making accusations which later proved groundless.

    Government focus on the resolution of Cyprus political problemThe next target, after Cyprus admission to the European Union without preconditions, is a just and viable resolution to the Cyprus political problem said Prime Minister Costas Simitis during his meeting with President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos.

    In their one-hour meeting yesterday, Mr. Simitis briefed the president on the events at the EU summit in Copenhagen.

    President Stephanopoulos expressed satisfaction at the outcome of the summit and Cyprus entry into the Community. He also congratulated the government and Simitis personally for his success in a very difficult mission and the leader of the main opposition New Democracy party for his role in bringing about the desired result.

    In Nicosia, Cyprus President, Glafkos Klerides who is examining measure to support Turkish-Cypriots, reiterated his intention to withdraw from politics on February 27, next year.

    In the meantime, in an interview with Greek state radio, NET, Cyprus government spokesman, Mihalis Papapetrou expressed fear that Turkish-Cypriot leader, Raulf Dektash might hamper the implementation of support measures intensifying frustration in the occupied part of the island.

    In Ancara, Dektash advisor, Ergiun Olgioun said that the Turkish side has given a positive response to the UN request for the opening of talks between the two sides in Cyprus.

    In an interview with CNN Turk, Turkish Foreign Minister Yiasar Yiakis appeared optimistic that the Cyprus political problem will have been resolved till February 28 next year.

    The next steps to be taken by UN Sec. Gen Kofi Annan are expected to be announced during today s meeting of the Security Council.

    The President of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, Nikos Konstantopoulos , who is on a visit to Turkey, after his meeting with the new Turkish leader, Tayip Erdogan stressed the necessity to observe the Copenhagen decisions with good faith and political willingness. Erdogan called for Mr. Constantopoulos support for a lifting of the embargo on Turkish-Cypriots while Dektash aide, Soyzal set the lifting of the embargo as a starting point for negotiations.

    [04] Bakoyianni shooter in custody at Korydallos prison, psychiatric wing

    A 35 year-old car mechanic , who tried to kill Athens mayor, Dora Bakoyianni last Friday has been remanded in custody at Korydallos prison s Psychiatric wing, after being charged with attempted murder and illegal possession and use of firearms. Giorgos Sandalis &#8211; who had a long history of mental rpoblems &#8211;was arrested soon after the attack, in which Bakoyianni s driver was injured in the neck. Bakoyianni escaped with minor cuts from broken glass after the gunman shot a riffle through the window of her car.
