[02] Worst road accident in Greece for 30 years-21 young people dead

Twenty one people dead, all of them students and 32 injured , some of them seriously is the toll in Greece s worst road accident for 30 years which was set off when logs fell off a truck on a narrow winding road in the Tempi Valley some 350 kilometers north of Athens.

The logs smashed into the top of the school-bus travelling in the opposite direction and caused two cars following the truck to crash into it and burst into flames. The bus carreered nearly 100 meters into a boulder strewn gorge. There were 49 students and three teachers in the bus . The children were returning to their school in Makrihori, albout 70 kilometers north of the accident, from a 3-day sightseeing trip to Athens and were less than an hour from home.

Makrihori, a mountain fruit village, has a population of only 3.000 and the tragedy has touched nearly every resident who was either related to or knew the young victims.

The truck driver, Dimitris Tollas under police guard in the Larissa Hospital said he lost control of the vehicle.

Prime-minister Simitis expressed his deep grief for the loss of so many young people and ordered an in depth investigation into the causes of the accident.
